Alright! Disclaimer: This is definitively not possible in RAW. BUT! Here me out.
I have an idea for a centaur cavalier, who deserted from the military after realizing what dickheads her superiors were during her first battle. Her usual Soldier feat is replaced with this: Military Deserter: You cannot show your face around military structures, in risk of being recognized and arrested for deserting. When you meet a member of the military you must succeed a persuasion check against a DC of 13. Otherwise you will be targeted by that person. Should you succeed they will choose to let you go and might even do you a favor on account of your shared history.
Now my idea is to replace the 3rd Level Cavalier feature Born to the Saddle (which for a Centaur is basically useless) with this homebrew feat: Lance Master: Due to your training in the cavalry you have mastered the use of the lance. You can use lances as if you are mounted. ((If this is too powerful, I thought you could make it that attacking while standing, you deal 1d8 + str mod damage, attacking after moving at least 15ft you deal 1d10 + str mod damage and attacking immediately after dashing you deal 1d12 + str mod damage))
I would then stack up Feats like Piercer, Charger, Mobile, etc. to really pull everything together. Cool? Too OP? Utterly useless? Let me know what you think :)
Other idea is to change the Level 3 Feature as follows: advantage on checks against getting knocked prone, and getting up from being prone only requires 5ft of movement
Homebrew Feature: Unmounted Mounted Combat: Requirements: Centaur, 15+Str; You gain +1 in Str or Dex, you gain proficiency with lances and are considered 'mounted' for the purposes of using them.
I would then spend 1 ASI to get this Homebrew Feat in order to be able to use lances one handed.
