This is my first attempt to homebrew something. Everyone is disappointed with the treatment of the Ranger class, especially its capstone. Compared to the other classes it's a very weak feature. Another thing I've noticed on the forums is the complaint about the Ranger's lack of identity, especially as a warrior of wilderness. To get around this, here are two small changes: one at fifth level that improves the Ranger's exploration capabilities, and another that slightly improves his capstone.
Wilderness Lore
By 5th level, your attumement with the wilderness increases. Whenever you make a Intelligence (Nature) or Wisdom (Survival) chevks, you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10. Additionally, you gains the follow features:
Difficult terrain doesn’t slow your group’s travel.
Your group can’t become lost except by magical means.
Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger.
If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would.
While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area.
All I did was adapt a less powerful version of Reliable Talent from Rogue, and ad the exploration stuff from Natural Exploxer, without linking it to a specific terrain.
Foe Slayer
At 20th level, you become an unparalleled hunter of your enemies. You received the follow features:
Bane of Enemies: Your attacks score critical hits on rolls of 18-20 on enemies marked by the Hunter's Mark.
Enhanced Hunter's Mark: The damage of the Hunter's Mark is increased to 1d12.
Predatory Instincts: When a creature marked by the Hunter's Mark makes an attack against you or other ally, you can use your Reaction to make a weapon attack against that creature if it is within range before the attack hits. If your attack hits, the marked creature makes its attack with Disavantage. You can mark another target as part of the same Reaction, if the current marked creature drops to 0 hit points.
With these additions and by increasing the damage dice of the Hunter's Mark, I believe that the Ranger will be able to perform better at 20th level. Bane of enemies together with Precise Hunter has great potential. Predatory Instincts is a way of making a new attack against a marked creature and disrupting its attacks.
Sorry for any linguagem mistakes.
