I'm attempting to build a strongly modified and reflavoured version of the bone knight from Valda's spire, and I figured that the best way is to build the subclass identical to the real deal, and after that go in and make all the changes.
Not doing so hot. I'm stuck on the very first feature, which is spoiled below.

Starting when you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you can sprout boney plates from your skin. While you aren’t wearing armor, this natural armor provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesn’t affect this number). You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield’s benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor.
Additionally, when you take bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, you can use your reaction to shield yourself from harm. Expend a Hit Die, roll it, and decrease the damage taken by the number rolled.

My problem is with all the AC stuff. whenever I try to modify AC it adds 10 from the base AC from the game in general, if you know what I mean. I also cant seem to figure out the scaling thing. I have it set up, but all it does i well, show words. it doesn't actually scale anything.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
