So over the last year I've created this homebrew universe, based on the Dungeon Masters Guide layout for the planes, but reflavored for my own purposes. It's been quite the labor of love and is still growing. I'm currently a couple sessions into my second campaign in this world. My first campaign adhered very closely to the basic d&d rules and monsters, complete with your cliche adventures and two dimensional NPCs. I've tried to step away from the conventional d&d adventures, that I've both been a part of and ran, and tried to give a different feel to it. Thought you guys might like to give it a quick read. Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to read it!
I want to do this campaign to give my universe and world more depth to the lore. I felt like much of my lore was becoming redundant and want to give people the ability to shape the history of this universe with their actions. I altered much of the game rules and added custom ones to give the players the feeling of breaking the bounds of what even the gods of my universe can do.
The campaign is set in the dawn of humanity, about a thousand years after the formation of the material plane. My players started their story as members of a group called The Hunters, the guerilla military force of the only known humanoid city D'Hara (influenced by my favorite book series). The players are the first humanoids to unlock their inner potential and gain a class. This becomes a turning point for the human city as they had never been able to expand in this ancient world, still filled with demons, angels, and all sorts of nasties. As the players "unlock" more of their powers their arcane energies spread to people they interact with. I've created tables with rolls to "class" NPCs as they interact with the parties power.
I want to give the adventures a feeling of a small party of supercharged beings fighting one massive creature, or similarly supercharged god. I added this homebrew item, called Celestial Crystal, to give the players the ability to increase their abilities beyond what exists in their class. The effects vary based on the crystal, from allowing the user to increase a stat by 1, to giving the user the effects of a multiclass without leveling up. I created it so that end game they can have their levels at about 35, various resistances and boons, buffed health, and custom magic items. I already had custom gods and titans, which I have now made actual statistics for, to create these multi-level cataclysmic boss fights. Speaking with my players beforehand and giving them the idea of what I want to do, they got excited and started planning out their characters and stories.
I also want to give my players the feeling of ascending beyond the level of most existing gods. I read a post about a worshiper systemfor your d&d players, giving them a sort if religion. I created a similar feature, more structured to my campaign, giving the party followers as a sort of renown system, or based on their interactions with NPCs. At certain milestones of followers the players gain certain boons or features, much of which I'm leaving to them to customize once we get there. My hope is that the players will create these stories that will influence future campaigns and create a world affected by this campaign.
I'd love to put all the details to my campaign on here but I dont want to ramble on more than I have. Feel free to message me if you ever wanna swap ideas!
