Hello and thanks for helping out. So I've started a heavily home brew imbued campaign and have created a strange new character concept with one of the players. I will just expand the concept so far and if anyone can direct me to some information or give me any suggestions as to how to create this character more completely I would appreciate it.
So the idea is of a Druid character that was actually killed and through a failed resurrection or spare the dye time spell or even the combination of healing magic and necrotic magic the character was brought back "Broken". He is not a zombie but more of just an empty husk of his former self. I told the player to imagine that his characters soul is being pull by the current of the Ethereal plane or the greater flow of magic but is still grasping on to the rock that is his physical form, like a rock in a stream.
Since the spell was broken the character and trapped in to magical current of the world his physical form is being held together by magic. I do not want the character to be healed by healing magic but at the same time if I do that he should not be as effected by necrotic magic. I like the idea of the character being "repaired" by the Mending Spell. My first question is are there any other spells that repair material items? I was thinking there could be a repair armor or maybe even a Heat metal spell that would act like a healing spell.
Another concept is that the character would actually have to feed on magical items much like a Vampire. I am thinking of giving the character something in the line of a monk's Ki points but represents the amount of magical energy that saturates his form. As he casts spells he depletes that amount as he gets closer to a certain time point starts to degrade and lose his sanity. Any ideas on how to form a exchange table to the consumption of magical items would be awesome. Also perhaps the ability to him to leach the magical energies of certain magical classes or to absorb spell for nourishment.
Some other points that I have decided are: 1. He loses 10 ft of speed as he has lost the connection to his body. 2. He takes a -1 to all ability scores again due to his disconnection to his body. 3. He feels not pain. 4. He suffers from constant hunger for magical energy. 5. He does not breath so can not drown, and also is not effected by gas so resistant to poison. 6. Since his original class was a druid and I believe he was circle of the moon I was thinking that he has lost his ability to create the form of certain animals but maybe gained the ability to take on the form of mechanical constructs.
So that is about as much as I have come up with. If anyone could direct me to tables or charts or want to create a table or reference guide for me that would be awesome. Also feel free to add your own ideas of how you would develop this character. Thanks to everyone for all the help.
I've been running the same campaign for the past 4 years (close to it). I started playing DND and never turned on my PlayStation. I have yet to use it and I don't think I'm going back. It's such a great hobby.
Sounds like you are trying to build something that is sort of a cross between a Revenant (Except more like the character version from 4th Ed) and a Flesh Golem. I want to say that I've seen the homebrew community and/or Unearthed Arcana take a stab at this sort of thing with some success. If I were to do this as a race, I might take the Warforged as a template, make it undead instead of a construct, and maybe make it heal from lightning damage?
If you want a cool ability to give him, the new Conclave Dryad has a fun magic item suppression ability that would make for a good daily power.
Suppress Magic (Recharge 5–6). The dryad targets one magic item it can see within 120 feet of it. If the magic item isn’t an artifact, its magical properties are suppressed for 10 minutes, until the dryad is incapacitated or dies, or until the dryad uses a bonus action to end the effect.

More like a custom condition. Every race and class can have a failed Resurrection attempt.

Awesome info, thanks. I will definitely look into this. Yes he is very much like a Revenant. I see an visual liking to that of the character of GARA in the Naruto series. He is kind of made of sand maybe, and that allows him to change his form somewhat instead of giving him wild shape. He has Mecha shape?

Sounds like mostly downside with little to no upside. Why do you keep comparing it to something mechanical or inorganic?
Were you considering a custom class or custom race for this? It sounds more like a race change.
