I'm running a campaign and in the first session I had my players meet a representative to Dracula.
Of course my party of 4 level 3s immediately start fighting this CR 13 vampire lady and she's just treating them like a nuisance.
But one player asks if she has anything metal on her. I make up that yes, she has a silvery dagger on her. He uses heat meal on it, she drops it.
After realizing they can't win, my players chat with her for a bit and she gives them a coin, which she had been giving the children that were kidnapped (not by her).
So the problem is: they used Identify on the coin and knife. I was hoping maybe to put some kind of tracker or scry spell maybe on one of them. But by rules of Identify, they'd know everything about them, and I think that'd remove a very cool narrative device. I'd like a way to at least make Identify take a roll or only be able to ID certain low-level spells.
I don't want to nerf my players, and I don't want to not tell them in 10 sessions "They knew what you were up to because of the knife! It was scrying on you!" and they be mad because they thought to use identify on it and I didn't tell them that. It's not fair.
So my biggest gripe is I need some way to keep secrets from my players who can easily use identify. Thanks.
