So my wizard has turned into bit of a chromatic fanatic at a fairly early level (currently level 2). He's also a spellwrite who not only adds spells as he's leveling, he creates spells during his down time. My dilemma is that I do not want to be strictly tied to fireball trope, so I quickly came up with an chromatic spell alternative that would hopefully not replace fireball, but would give another option. So just to get it out of the way, the spell is Fizzlewix's Chromatic Blast. Below I have provided the quick make I did for its current condition, but I feel that its a tad too strong at the moment. Right now, I'm unsure the damage it should be left alone due to the range reduction and component cost (plan on changing it to a diamond cost of at least 75 gp). As of right now I'm thinking of reducing it by 1d8 and maybe reducing the range to 90 feet if needed, or even reintroducing the randomness of his cantrip variant of chromatic orb. So currently I'm unsure if that the damage reduction enough or if the other changes are need or heck is it fine as it and I'm over thinking this. Please let me know what you think.
Fizzlewixs Chromatic Orb (as is) - Fireball
Range - 120 ft (20-foot sphere) < 150 (20-foot sphere)
Damage at 3rd level - Min 6 < 8 - Max 48 > 40 - Average 30 < 32
Damage at 6th level - Min 9 < 11 - Max 72 > 66 - Average 45 < 55
Damage at 9th level - Min 12 < 14 - Max 96 > 84 - Average 60 > 56
I can't see why anyone would take Fireball if Chromatic Blast exists. If I were a door to door mage, I'd pitch Chromatic Blast as the Elemental Evocation for Any Occasion. It even does fire damage. And 25gp isn't enough to stop me from casting it, unless GP and/or gemstones are rare.
Fireball is the token example of something OP for its level on purpose; is there so casters feel like giants on the battlefield. I wouldn't step on its toes, otherwise you're turning that power spike shape from a triangle to a trapezoid.
As is, I would increase it's level way up, or reduce its damage by more than 1d8, or make the element random (with an option at a higher level to add +1 or -1 to the random roll to give you a little more control).
Or some combination of the above.
If not that, then I'd consider removing Fireball from your game completely because this town ain't big enough for the both of them.
Make the damage type random, then allow the player to upcast and roll twice for the type? That'd be fun!
After some more thinking I will add the random mechanic into the spell and I'm still thinking of reducing the damage by 1d8 so even when its lands on fire, fireball would have still been better controlled option. I don't plan on adding the roll twice option when upcasted due to the damage is still fairly high. Another reason why is that there can be a future item/boon that me and my dm can work out to help "control" Fizzlewix's flavor of unstable elemental magic.
