I want to replace the rogue's expertise with something better. While the ability fulfills some player's want to succeed at any check in the game, I think that there could be an overall cooler ability that would make the class more interesting.
I haven't yet thought of an ability, but it would have to follow one restriction. If it were to become a subclass feature, it would have to replace one of the ones already present, and it would shift where the rogue's subclass levels are. It would also require a rewriting of all the material that has been added for rogue subclasses.
Because of this it should be a general class feature. If it were an ASI, I think it would either take away from the roleplaying aspect that expertise is meant to bring, or it would impose on fighter's territory by taking what makes fighters special. So perhaps something completely new?
Thank you for reading, and for any response you may give.
Well, I'm fine with Expertise as it is... I'd have to see a really good idea presented as an alternative. A lot of people like Rogue specifically for Expertise, so I'm not sure what would be a good replacement. Maybe something that allows the player to reroll failed ability checks? I think i"d still prefer expertise, though.
