I'm attempting to make a homebrewed magic item that replaces the user's (warforged) arm. It can function like a normal arm but can also shoot like a hand crossbow and has a once per short rest "spell". The spell is called "Spirit Cannon" and functions like a lightning bolt, except the user needs to sacrifice HP or movement speed to add damage. The idea being that it literally uses your spirit energy for the attack, and the more you use the strong it is. Let me know your thoughts on the balance. I think it's a really fun idea and don't see a lot of items or spells that really let you dictate the extent of the effects (with real negative scalable repercussions)
Buster Cannon: Weapon (crossbow, hand), rare (requires attunement by a warforged required)
This mysterious mechanical arm, built by unknown forces, can be attuned to a Warforged's arm. It acts and responds as a normal arm would, however there is a red circular gem in the palm. Once attuned, the gem operates like a hand crossbow. The gem fires a bolt that deals force damage and there are no ammunition requirements however it must reload.
Once per short rest you may activate the Spirit Cannon. You sacrifice some of your spirit to inflict damage on your enemies. You may choose up to twice your proficiency modifier worth of (d6) dice. You take n(d6) damage. Using that spirit sacrifice, a beam of pure force forming a line 100 feet long and 5 feet wide blasts out from the gem in a direction of your choosing. Each creature in the line must make a Dexterity saving throw. Creatures take twice the damage you sacrificed, as force damage, on a failed Dexterity saving throw, or damage equal to your sacrifice on a successful one.
You may also choose to sacrifice your movement speed. For every 10 movement speed you sacrifice (for 1 minute) you may add a (d6) to your damage.
If you sacrifice more than half of your max health you incur 1 level of exhaustion
At Higher Levels. This spell's damage die changes when you reach 6th level (d8), 10th level (d10), and 15th level (d12).
Your DC for the Laser Cannon is (8+proficiency+Dex modifier)
Proficiency with a hand crossbow allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!
