Hello, I'm having difficulty modifying a homebrew racial feature insofar that I cannot remove the feature's To Hit and Damage bonuses. Ideally, I'd like this feature to function identically to the Poison Spray cantrip but have limited uses, and everything seems to function fine except for the inherent bonuses mentioned. There should be no To Hit value at all, but the feature seems to embed that as a default.
Originally I tried copying the Poison Spray cantrip as a class feature, but since it's a cantrip it doesn't seem to have any Limited Uses value. If anyone has insight on how to remove To Hit/Damage bonuses from an Action, or if they know how to apply Limited Uses to a cantrip I'd be greatly appreciative, thank you! Descriptive posted below.
Edit: I should note that I want to retain the CHA/proficiency based modifer to save DC, but remove the other CHA based modifiers.
Actions are a bit weird and unintuitive! There are two basic solutions that spring out to me:
Don't make it a weapon: Weapons force you to choose an option that will result in an attack roll, if you go General and don't choose melee/ranged then if you set a constitution save it should take precedence and display properly. If you want to prototype this more quickly, go into a character sheet and add a custom action; all the options are basically the same as in Homebrew, so you can try all options and see how they appear right away, then just copy them to your homebrew, this avoids the delay before homebrew on a character sheet updates.
Add Poison Spray as a Spell: Probably the easiest way to give the player a limited use Poison Spray, is to just do that; under spells, add a new entry with Poison Spray as the spell, set the right ability score (for the save DC) then either enter a fixed Number of Uses, or set a Use By Ability Modifier (to tie the uses to an ability score modifier, so +3 WIS becomes 3 uses for example). This will let the player see the spell and some charges for it, if that's the only way their know the cantrip. The question here will be whether you want the race to have the Poison Spray cantrip, or if what you want is something else that's equivalent.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
Hey Haravikk, unfortunately I've tried both of these things and both unwanted modifiers still remain even if the Action is not a weapon.
As well, I haven't found a way to limit the use of spells if they are cantrips. There seems to be some incompatibility with Cantrips and the Limited Uses functions.
Will double check both of these later, however. If I find a solution I will elaborate.
