So this is readily available to be commented on in the Homebrew Items section of the site, so as to not bump the views/ratings there, I wanted to post it here as well for feedback.
Here is the description of the item and its overall mechanics. Any and all feedback is appreciated, and I am more than willing to see this added to your games with your own added tweaks! Is this something you'd be interested in using as a player or as a DM giving to a player?
You have a +1 bonus to AC while wearing this armor.
The armor has an ominous presence - as if it is still a living, breathing creature. It calls out to you... as if in protest. Are you worthy to be its master, or does its search for a true master continue?
When successfully attuned, you may speak the creatures name to summon it for one hour (1 hour,) and unsummon it by speaking its name again. Only the person attuned to the armor can summon it in this manner. You can command the creature telepathically. It is sentient and capable of speech/understanding Sylvan. If unable to speak Sylvan, the creature acts on its own, based on its intelligence score. It can discern from friendly/hostile targets. Resistances/Immunities and other effects dependent on creature stats from Monster Manual or DM Homebrew. When summoned, the player loses their AC bonus from the Armor, reverting to 10+Dex until the creature returns to its armored form.
COMBAT: Summoning is ONE ACTION, and the creature gains its own initiative and actions.
DM ONLY: If the Animal Handling check is failed initially, the player cannot attempt to summon the creature until their next level up. It acts as +1 leather armor. If failed a second time, the creature will attempt to flee. The player may initiate combat with the creature in order to subdue it. If beaten, the creature will be submissive and honor the agreement. If the creature successfully flees the area, the players (as in the whole party) cannot attempt to challenge the creature again for 1 year in game time, in that the time the challenge rating and DC will increase. If the player waits until they are higher than the creatures Challenge Rating to attempt to control it again, the creature is emboldened by the characters presence - becoming one level higher quality and offers its services willingly. Otherwise it will naturally progress at PC level 8/12/15/18 (+2/+3/+4/+5.) Each increase in armors level, increases summon-ability by 1, to a max of 5, per day.
At +5 the creatures size changes to one size larger, stats changing respectively, double modifier.
The breastplate and shoulder protectors of this armor are made of leather that has been stiffened by being boiled in oil. The rest of the armor is made of softer and more flexible materials.
Notes: Bonus: Armor Class, Charges gained at 8th, 12th, 15th, and 18th Player Character Level., You must be able to identify what creature the armor has come from, either by studying it for one hour (1 hour) or by succeeding on a Nature check (DC 15 for common beasts or DC 18 for uncommon, and DC 24 for Exotic.) Alternatively, if you can understand Sylvan, you may speak the word that is etched into the armor to summon it. Animal Handling check (DC 15/18/24) to command/persuade the beast to serve., Summoning, Combat, Warding
