I'm interested in finding a good group and good DM but one who knows how to rule the darkness spell correctly. How do you rule it?
A.) The way it should be with Disadvantage only on attacker if they can't see in magical darkness (because of heavily obscured target) acting much like the blinded status and that there can be no disadvantage on the defender because defending a normal melee/spell attack is not a saving through or ability check and is against targets AC only and thus no roll therefore no second dice for disadvantage and subsequently 2 blind people do not cancel each other out and attack as normal they just both flounder around trying to hit each other and unless they have blind fighting to capitalize on the sound they hear it won't matter because they haven't been blind for 20 years only 6 seconds and it's temporary. OR,
B.) The dumb way where DM's cancels out the darkness incorrectly by saying since both the target and attacker have disadvantage (wrong defender has no disadvantage to defend because it's not a saving throw or ability check it's a standard attack roll against AC and AC has no roll therefore can not have an added dice for disadvantage) basically believes 1blind person + 1blind person = no blind person (which is totally moronic) and thus rules the darkness spell has no effect (again moronic) and they avoid it because sucks to be them, their monsters or anybody else in magical darkness that can't see.. AKA the point of the spell?
Sorry, a little salty because last DM chose B. and without allowing rebuttal and rule zeroed on me just to win and wouldn't even talk about at table.

Combatants often try to escape their foes’ notice by hiding, casting the invisibility spell, or lurking in darkness.
When you attack a target that you can’t see, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. This is true whether you’re guessing the target’s location or you’re targeting a creature you can hear but not see. If the target isn’t in the location you targeted, you automatically miss, but the DM typically just says that the attack missed, not whether you guessed the target’s location correctly.
When a creature can’t see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it.
If you are hidden — both unseen and unheard — when you make an attack, you give away your location when the attack hits or misses.
