Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online (possibly with occasional Face-to-face) Experience: a few years Location/Timezone: Edinburgh, BST Schedule: Every Monday from 18:30 until 22:00. Hoping to begin at the start of November. Roles sought: Players Game style: There’ll be a good mix of RP, combat and exploration but I hope that RP will rise to the top. Combat will be medium to hard difficulty, player deaths are a real possibility but content should ideally be tuned so that they are rare, but close calls are common.
Hi! We’re looking for 3-4 people to join our new campaign: The Horrors of Karrnath.
The campaign will take place in Karrnath, a region in the world of Eberron with gothic vibes. It will primarily revolve around traditional horror monsters such as vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monster, etc, but with an Eberron twist. As the mysteries around these creatures are unraveled, it may turn out there is more to them than meets the eye…
The campaign will be player driven with a focus on player stories. Each player’s background should either involve a classic horror monster or have a monster shaped hole for one to be added. As the campaign progresses each will be explored.
To maintain the horror vibe, players should avoid characters who are themselves horrorsome. A sheltered wizard who has rarely left the university campus is going to be more terrified of a zombie than a dhampir warlock who grew up alongside the undead. As Karrnath has long dabbled with necromancy, player characters should be new to the region so that they are unfamiliar and uncomfortable with it.
We’re looking for:
Keen and experienced players with a focus on roleplay who are able to dedicate enough time for a weekly game
Enthusiastic players. Enthusiasm makes the game more enjoyable for everyone
While we understand that everyone needs to miss a session occasionally, we’re hoping for 90% attendance
Players with access to webcams. Online RP works much better when everyone can see each other
(Bonus) Although the campaign will mostly be online, a perfect candidate would be one who would be able to attend occasional in-person sessions in Edinburgh. These are a fun way to handle major events and would happen no more than 2-3 times a year. This is a bonus, so please still apply if this doesn’t sound feasible for you.
Edit: Applications are now closed! Thank you everyone for applying, if you are shortlisted we'll be in contact in the next week.
Additional Information
Players: 4-5
Age: 18+
Friendly towards: Everyone!
Starting level: 1. You’ll quickly level to 3, however.
Genre: A mix but focusing on horror. The major arcs will be mostly horror, ranging from mild campy spookiness through to dark and serious. However there will be plenty respite from the doom and gloom as well.
Setting: Eberron. This is an official setting where low level magic and magical technology is rife and where typical fantasy tropes don’t apply. An orc might be a shamanistic peacekeeper, and a goblin may be a regular down the pub. Any sentient being may be good or evil and country lines say more about a person’s morality than race does. Everyday magical technology exists, at least in the major cities. The lightning rail is used by many on their daily commute, while instantaneous long distance communication is affordable to most. The continent of Khorvaire has recently emerged from a 100 year long war which has left it fragmented and broken. Adventures in Eberron are often full of pulp adventure and noir intrigue.
Difficulty: Medium to hard. Player deaths are a real possibility but content should ideally be tuned so that they are rare, but close calls are common.
Three Pillars Ratio: There’ll be a good mix of RP, combat and exploration but I hope that RP will rise to the top
Software:
Discord: Voice and video required. Text channels set up for chat between sessions
Roll20: For music, battle maps, and handouts. We have a Plus subscription
D&D Beyond: For character sheets and dice rolls. We can share access to nearly all content
Character Options: Characters will be built using Point Buy and Rolled HP. A free feat will be available at level one. Most official content allowed. This is detailed in the Character Restrictions and Allowed content sections of my table rules document
Optional, Variant and Homebrew rules: We use a number of optional and variant rules as well as a small handful of minor homebrew rules. These can also be found in my table rules document
My experience as DM: I’ve been playing for around four years, mostly as DM. I recently concluded a highly modified Storm King’s Thunder campaign which I ran from level 1-20 across over 120 sessions. I’ve also run a short adventure through Q’Barra in Eberron and Lost Mine of Phandelver, which was my first experience of both DMing and D&D in general. Additionally I’ve run numerous one-shots, some of which I’ve written up and released on DMs Guild. I have some experience as a player too and recently finished a 1-20 Eberron campaign (though I joined at level 8). I actually concluded both 1-20 campaigns in the same week, I can’t imagine many people can make that claim!
