Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online only (Discord/FoundryVTT) Experience: experienced preferred, GM experience not required Location/Timezone: PST Schedule: limited series weekly tbd Roles sought: rotating DMs/players Game style: gladiator style arena combat
As a GM, do you ever feel like your epic combats fall flat? Do you want to get some real life practice and feedback from other GMs? Personally, I do great with storylines, but in 5e my players cakewalk through most of my bad guys. Not only that, but I'm still getting better with the virtual tools. I have settled for the time being on Discord and FoundryVTT, but there is a lot to get familiar with.
So, I came up with an idea: find a group of GMs who want to practice running combats so they can make their own combats better, and we can host an informal forum. If there's enough interest, we can each take a turn running a Mortal Kombat, gladiator-style contest while the rest of us control players. We can learn from each other's styles and offer each other tips and guidance, while also experiencing combats from the players perspective so we can see what works and what doesn't. Basically we will work together to up our game.
Topics I'd like to discuss:
how to prepare for an epic combat
creating balanced encounters
running combat in FoundryVTT and plug-ins to improve the experience
maintaining the narrative during combat encounters
making calls on the fly - dealing with the unexpected
making use of the available terrain
having bad guys use spells & skills effectively
creating interesting maps
pacing the action so it stays exciting
We can share whatever tricks and tools we use with each other so we can take them back to our respective groups and wow them.
A few additional notes:
Death in glorious combat is likely to be a routine occurrence. We will celebrate the passing of our heroes, and then we will delete them up and roll up new ones. If you're going to get testy about your character dying, even under unfair circumstances or poor judgement on the part of the GM, then please look for a regular game.
Everyone who plays will also be asked to GM a combat. It's ok if you are still learning, but it will be better for everyone if you've tried running at least one live combat and you know where you want to improve.
I'm using Discord and FoundryVTT and I'm committed to them for now so please only respond if you want to play with those tools.
