Have you ever had an engaging backstory for a character you were excited to explore, made the character, joined a game, to ultimately have it go no where? Me too. Finding a Dungeon Master who is capable of investing the necessary time and effort into making a personalized journey for your character while running games full-time is next to impossible. Well, I'd like to offer a different experience for players.
Welcome to my Campaign. I am a lifelong roleplayer (25+ years), both as a player and as a DM, with a background in theater and improv. I work a normal, full time job but I’d like to create a secondary role as a professional DM. And so I find myself looking for my first paid group.
I view roleplaying not as a game, but as a vehicle for collaborative story-telling. As a DM, I’m not an adversary at the table, just an arbiter to keep the story moving forward. I spend time thinking about the psychology of roleplaying, the layers of information at the table, and how to articulate those thoughts. For me, having the right energy at the table is paramount. I don’t think any playstyle is right or wrong, everyone just needs to be on a similar wavelength.
For my table, I’m looking for quality humans who enjoy storytelling. Who aren’t trying to create optimized statistical representations of game board pieces. Who aren’t salty about fictional loot. Who celebrates the other player’s impressive moments. Who view roleplaying as fellowship and community. Who want to work collaboratively with their DM to create characters, factions, locations, and stories, together.
The price point will be a premium. I’m not interested in running multiple games, I want to focus on a single campaign and the characters within. I want to learn about your characters. Remember what skills and weaknesses they possess. Things they know and care about. Weave them into the fabric of the world. This will not be production-level quality, but that is my north star.
New players are absolutely welcomed. One of my favorite parts about the hobby is providing new and curious players a wonderful space to experience the joy it can bring.
Some of my strengths as a DM are:
- Involving everyone at the table, prompting players with ‘what would you like to do?’ and giving them situations to shine. - Providing an inclusive environment. - Working with players to have moments and scene that are directly for their character. - Descriptions of the environment, actions, outcomes, etc. - Facilitating a narrative experience. My role isn’t adversarial and I’m not trying to ‘win’ or kill anyone. - Improv, both as a roleplayer and as someone who likes the ‘rule of cool.’ - Giving new players the ability to learn the hobby and ruleset. - I like lists.
Some of my weaknesses as a DM are:
- Details matter, for better or worse. - New or improv voices can become inconsistent if I’m unable to grok the method or mannerisms. - I am narrative driven. Choices are made through that lens. - I can be long-winded and meander in conversation. - Newer to running games on Roll20, so likely a few technical kinks to work out along the way. - I like lists.
The first few campaigns I will run will be a customized version of Lost Mines of Phandelver. I think it’s a great starting point to run professional games, with the ultimate end goal of inviting favorite players to a long-term, homebrew world/campaign I have run for several groups of friends.
What I would like from you as a player at our table:
- You come with a positive, kind, and compassionate attitude. - Motivated by group storytelling and not numbers and loot. - Understanding my role is difficult and provide me with the necessary grace to facilitate for everyone. - Commit to respecting other people’s time and effort.
As for details about the campaign:
- The game will have mature themes at times. Violence, slavery, discrimination, etc. These are vehicles for powerful storytelling, but none of these and other similar themes are a fetish or glorified. - It will run the first three weeks of each month, with the fourth (and fifth during some months) being a night off. - Sessions will be either Monday or Tuesday evenings starting somewhere around 7pm CST and running for 3-4 hours long. I am flexible but whatever schedule the group agrees to will remain consistent throughout the campaign. - Players in the group will have diversity in representation. - Both voice and video will be used in Discord. Being able to see people’s expressions while they are talking or roleplaying helps me greatly. - The campaign will be largely as 'theater of the mind' but maps will be used for combat or scenarios where visualization or positioning are key elements. - We will roll physical dice. No need for it to be on camera. I enjoy the ritual of rolling plus it gives me a few extra moments to think on my feet. If you are the kind of person who would misrepresent rolls, this would not be the table for you. - There are custom feats, subclasses, maps, spells, items, and more. Some are already created, others we may create together, and others will be created on the fly. - The cost will be $100 USD per session, per player ($300 per month).
I freely admit, this will not be a table for everyone. I have a vision of what I want the experience to be and would like to find players who feel similar about the hobby.
If interested, please leave your Discord handle in the thread below and I’ll contact you to talk shop, see if we would enjoy each other’s company. It will likely take some time to fill out a group, so we may have to remain patient in the meantime. Also happy to answer any questions you may have.
