-Game- Advanced D&D 2nd Edition core handbooks and various early monster manuals
-Online Play-
-DM has seven years experience running 5e and has run about a dozen games of 2e during college. DM has never ran a 2e game for players who had played 2e before.
-DM operates under -5 EST time zone, but is more or less widely available around the clock.
-No schedule for play available until enough players express interest and give availability.
-Seeking players both new (5e experience but little to no ad&d experience) and experienced (people who have played 2e)
-I got into 2e from reading a pamphlet I found online advertizing upgrading from 1e ad&d (which I hadn't played either) and the advert talked up a lot of roleplaying and class specific exp rewards. I proceeded to read the phb and dmg and did some strained research.
-It turns out, from what I can understand, players and DM's never ran 2e by the books because the books are very silly. However I wish to try and use them as imagined and take in stride the pseudo-automation and disconnected mini-games. But yeah, no complex homebrew writeup about d20 skill checks. Bend bars, lift gates, hide in shadows.
-Stats are to be discussed as a group but I am advisng for rolling 3d6 down the line using the dice bot until something speaks to you- not until your warrior has 18(00) str.
-Game World is explained in the server but to summarize it is an earth-like world circa 1400's but in the last century or two (post black-death equivalent event) a Dungeon is discovered and explored. This dungeon's layers release scrolls, monsters, spirits, and a limited population of extraplanar refugees (fantasy races). Now, seeking the lost dungeon, a finance company supplies a party to head into the Boundary Forest and chart the wilderness beyond- looking for the lost Dungeon.
-Character backgrounds are from one of four regions each with resources the other regions lack.
-Gameplay starts at first or otherwise low level in the woods for some time, where small challenges provide opportunities for players to tackle or bypass them however they see fit.
-The wilderness survival guide is a book I am familiar with and that can automate anything if advanced elements of survival becomes of interest to the players.
-We will try to use as many fun exp bonuses that the rules reccomend for things like coming up with an idea that helps everyone (doesn't have to be a role played thing- ad&d wants Players to Think and be Rewarded) or class specific ones like warriors getting bonuses for hit dice of monsters slain or for challenging a threatening for to single combat. Wizards get rewards for spellcasting and crafting that can actually make exp-cost mechanics more worthwhile. If a priest has downtime they can go on a pilgrimage and return with real exp over that time on a bus. And thieves have an additional exp for gold stolen >and earned< if you work a shift somewhere. I find it very silly and encouraging- and you don't have to explicitly roleplay to get these rewards.
-I don't think I will need any complex tools. Owlbearrodeo is a fine simple table tool and the server has a dice bot. There is no timeframe for starting or days when we play since I am looking for players. So, dates and times to be discussed. Not in a hurry, I know it's a wierd ask. I have two tentative yes's from 5e players and one yes from a 2e player so far.
Mods, I miss anything?
Prospective players comment below and we can chat about any questions. I'll hand out an invite link eventually.
PS: Scrolls are like artifacts in this setting, so I want arcane spellcasting to be potentially learnable by any class should they obtain such a rare item as a scroll or spellbook should they pass a check one of the very strange 'stat checks' (a roll to learn a spell). No guarantee that a bunch of fighters can start casting magic missile because they found a scroll from The Dungeon but the chance is theoretically there.
Im interested is this pretty much a older dungeon diving dnd? Sounds sick. How similar is this to earth? I think the scroll idea is dope but it's easily exploitable, what if a barbarian gets a self healing spell and just constantly heals himself.
I used to play in-person D&D in the 90s as a young adult. Haven’t played since then. I would consider myself newish since it’s been a while. Never played online before but I’m definitely interested! If you have a place where I’d fit in let me know!
I’m in the USA EST and have most availability nights and weekends. Sundays are my most open days.
Sounds good s long as you can join a voice call eventually. Theatre of mind with simple drawings.
Also, the learn spell check system in base ad&d is about magic-user spells and not priest spells as it is an int check. The territories outside of the immediate adventure area are not anticipated to be explored in any detail outside of backstories tied to one of four basic regions. For comparison to earth concerning the four starting regions, think Holy France in the mountains (west) Venice in a coastal bay (south) and Poland townships with lots of german philosophers (east) and the center region doesn't have a parallel but it's basically a grab bag of hamlets and trading posts and forts like a classic dnd border-settlement that tries to keep farms and homes safe from goblins and orcs and stuff.
I have played a long time but not a veteran. I would love to play a fighter that sees polite settings as hostile and hostile settings as polite, mentally broken type person. that has a cat with its own back story. Monday and Tuesday are my weekend days. my handle on most D&D sites is Kultach.
