Hey there nerds and storytellers! I’m Tops (21 y.o, she/her) and I’m looking for 4-5-ish players for a roleplay/story-heavy campaign of 5e D&D.
When? Unless something stands in the way, we’ll be playing every other Thursday at 7 pm GMT+1. This is slightly negotiable, but be clear about your availability in your application.
How? We will use discord for voice, and owlbear rodeo to host the battlemaps. (Owlbear rodeo is notoriously simple, so I’ll help y’all learn it in no time, don’t worry.) Make sure you have a decent microphone and a relatively quiet place to play. We will be using both voice and video to play. It’s not required to do video for every session, but please only apply if you’re comfortable using it.
Who? New players and experienced players are both welcome. Preferred age range is 18-26, but feel free to apply even if you’re outside it!
Length: This campaign is a shorter term one. If I had to guess, what I have in mind takes 9-12 ish months to get through. After the campaign comes to an end, that might be it for me dm’ing. If the group really clicks though, I won’t deny the possibility of moving on to another small campaign or maybe even a longer-term one. Given that I’m already DM’ing another long-term campaign, though, I can’t promise that this experiment ends with me rearing for another go. But we’ll see!
Please make sure the set time works for you and that you’ve read this post in its entirety before you apply. I prefer getting expectations aligned right out of the gate!
CAMPAIGN PREMISE
When a great evil threatened the lands, a group of reluctant heroes rose up against it. They went on glorious adventures, forged close friendships, made dastardly enemies and eventually became famous protectors of the realm.
…That group was you. Or, that’s what you’ve been told, at least. After being hit by that pesky memory ray, you don’t really recall those years of heroism, nor the companions you apparently have grown so close to. The great powers and legendary magic items you had amassed don’t seem to be working right either. There’s little time to get your bearings though: The rest of the world still remembers every slight, every promise and every responsibility that belonged to your previous selves. The realm needs saving, and despite everything, you’re still the only ones who can do it. So get to it!
YOU MIGHT BE A GOOD FIT IF:
You enjoy roleplaying with your DM and fellow players.
You enjoy combat encounters with gimmicks, hazards and unusual win conditions.
You really enjoy crafting stories collaboratively, and acknowledge that setbacks and defeat can sometimes make the story better.
You’re not opposed to shenanigans.
You’re not opposed to shit getting serious and unabashedly dramatic.
ABOUT THE DM
Greetings, helpless pawns- (*cough cough*), I mean uh, valued applicants!
I’m a 21 year old gal from Denmark with an all-consuming passion for storytelling in all its forms. Hiding behind lovingly crafted deathtraps and webs of dastardly plots, you’ll find an enormous ******* nerd who spends a lot more time thinking about d&d than is probably healthy.
I’m from the “watched an actual play” generation of players, and shows like Critical Role, The Adventure Zone and Dimension 20 have for sure helped shape the kinds of games I want to run. My strengths as a dm probably lie in having a decent sense of story and pacing and being very invested in letting my players have actual agency and plenty of room to shine.
My biggest weakness is probably that I don’t always have the greatest sense of how things “should” be realistically: Descriptions of scale, time and spatial positioning might be a bit off sometimes. Also, expect my flavor of worldbuilding to be more centered around what I find fun and interesting than any kind of realism. Lastly: Pretty sure I’m lowkey accent deaf. So that’s going to be hilarious for everyone involved.
Basically: I’m a level designer and a storyteller, probably not a reliable physics engine. I’ll be learning and evolving, but you should preferably be willing to accept that package as is!
ROLEPLAY
The campaign will be pretty roleplay heavy – I’m a story oriented DM, and I’m looking for players that want a campaign along those lines. Some thoughts on that:
I’m looking for players willing to take big swings and make the suboptimal choice at times for the sake of a great narrative. (I’ll reward you with cool story beats, promise.)
There’ll be an adjustment period, and none of us are professional actors, but I hope that we can get to a point where we’re comfortable enough to make total fools of ourselves and get hardcore into character!
Help the whole table have fun. Look for ways to involve someone else in a scene, hype people up when they do something cool, and be engaged even when it’s not about you! I’d like the vibe at the table to be as supportive and friendly as possible. If you’re not really in it for the collaborative experience, this table probably won’t be for you.
Don’t just wait for me to entertain you or trick you into caring — do your part and make sure your character actually wants to be there! Makes everything easier on me and a lot more fun for everybody.
COMBAT
Combat will be run through a healthy mix of theater of the mind and very detailed maps that I’ve probably spent wayyyy too much time designing (or have shamelessly ripped from somewhere).
I strive to make combat feel light and fun, yet fair and honestly threatening. Expect actions to be met with consequences, both good and bad!
I generally dislike “stand in a room and hit the enemies until they die”-combat. Expect lots of alternate combat objectives and terrain hazards.
I’m definitely not immune to common-sense rulings and the occasional rule of cool whenever it doesn’t break the integrity of the world. Creative solutions will often be rewarded in my game.
I’ll be happy to help with whatever you need help with, but I do also expect you to learn your own abilities after a while. I’m putting a lot of work into the game, and a good way to respect that is to make sure I don't have to do any more than necessary.
TONE
I’d describe the tone I’m imagining for this campaign as “wacky fantasy, but with an unapologetically sincere core.” Expect a decent amount of ******* around with classic d&d tropes and a lot of silly npcs, but also expect me to go for the occasional “shit just got real” moment.
That being said, the tone for this world is generally lighthearted, so keep that in mind when you interact with the world. Be sure to make a character that won’t clash wildly with the generally lighter, heroic fantasy tone. This is probably not the campaign for your “I have seen the horrors of war and men are nothing but beasts” character.
CHARACTER CREATION AND RULES
Real quick overview, this’ll be discussed in depth later.
We’re doing milestone leveling.
I allow some homebrew classes. Check out the info doc that I link in the “Setting” section for a list.
I use some homebrew rules, but mostly QOL stuff. Feel free to ask me to elaborate if needed.
DON’T BE A DICK
This one should be fairly obvious.
Treat your fellow players with respect. If you’ve got a problem, talk it out like adults instead of bringing it into the game. If a player has made you seriously uncomfortable, or is otherwise seriously negatively impacting your enjoyment of the game (and I seem to be unaware), be sure to let me know so I can help do something about it.
While I’d prefer to solve issues with the severely underrated tool called Honest Interpersonal Communication, I reserve the right to kick out a player I feel isn’t working within the context of the group anytime.
I’m looking for players who’ll help keep the table actively and enthusiastically inclusive. I myself am queer (aro/ace!) and my world, much like the real world, has queer people and people who aren’t white in it. If this somehow detracts from your experience, this won’t be the table for you.
THE SETTING
“Welcome to The Inkdot – a charming little world filled with magical wonders, lovable weirdos, and the everpresent threat of The Grey Lich. Explore a world doing its level best to live joyously despite the coming darkness. You could visit the metal trees of the northern Ironbark forests, solve the mysteries of the flying city of Aavia or carve yourself a home in the energetic and eccentric capital city of Bustle-
Only. You’ve already done this once before, haven’t you? You might not remember, but the world certainly does. Do your best to follow in your own footsteps, don’t stumble, and see if you can manage to write a tale all your own along the way.
It’s just the fate of the world. No big deal.”
The Inkdot is a snug little miniature world that I've filled it to the brim with everything I personally love: My favorite tropes, some shamelessly stolen ideas, my funkiest NPC’s, all that good stuff. It also runs primarily on fantasy logic. Just roll with it.
I’m not going to go on a huge tangent about my oh so deep and special worldbuildinghere because, let’s be honest, y’all don’t care all that much. Instead, here’s a taste of things you might run into during our time playing together:
Dwarves with inconsistent accents
Unionized goblins
A place where you can ethically beat your friends to death
A perfectly normal housecat
A literal ghost town
Things that put your life in danger
The people worth putting your life in danger for
Potions of dubious quality and origin
Dragons in disguise
Investigative journalists
Untrustworthy authority figures
People you’ve slighted
People you owe money
People who want you dead
Seriously, why do so many people want you dead????
And much, much more! If you really want to, you can get a quick overview of the setting + allowed homebrew here:
Players will be chosen within the next few days. If you can see this, you still have time to apply!
My favorite applications will be invited to a short 5-minute “interview” so I can get to know the person behind the application. From there I’ll try to get a crew together from interviewees that I really vibe with.
Really hope to hear from you all!!! If you’ve got any questions at all about the setting or the game, ask in the comments. I’m more than happy to answer!
Hi! I'd love to try playing. I'm from Italy, Amab, 35 and I love role-playing and collaborative worldbuilding. There's only a side note that I hope is not a dealbreaker for you. While I consume almost every media in English and usually understand every conversation, I've used spoken English only at work, so I might stutter and stumble with words once in a while.
