Game style: combat lite, roleplay heavy, Rule of Cool
Sites used: Discord, Roll20, D&D Beyond
Price: $10/session
Game Description:
This is a D&D 5e game of Out of the Abyss. I will be running it in 2 parts. This listing is for the first part. We will be using a mix of 2014 and 2024 rules. Most mechanics and mosters will come from the 2024 rules. Some mechanics will come from 2014, for example, madness, sanity, and rules about environmental conditions. Some legacy monsters are also unavoidable.
Between each part of the campaign, there will be an opportunity for players to cycle in and out (of course, players can cycle out sooner if needed). Each part of the campaign will include a session 0. The hope is that this reduces any snags caused by a party change, and gives people an opportunity to leave the campaign if it no longer works for them.
Part 1 is dark, dangerous, survival fantasy. The module includes an extensive hexcrawl, but we're going to summarize and fast-forward quite a bit, giving you a taste of a hexcrawl without the grind. We will track rations and water to the best of our ability, but who wants to track their arrows? Not me. We'll focus less on the nitty-gritty and more on role-play and character development. There will be combat, but only as called for in the fiction. Though there may end up being less combat than what's written in the module, the threat level will still be present. Your characters could still die.
We will be using milestone leveling, and you can expect about a level per chapter, sometimes more and sometimes less. I plan to get everyone up to at least level 7 by the end of this part. If the party is particularly heroic, there's a good chance this will be higher.
The biggest catch for some people will probably be this: You will start without any of your equipment and/or spellcasting items. Spellcasters might not able to do much until you escape the prison.
Beginners are welcome to play. I'm aiming for a relaxed table with gameplay that is interesting and exciting but accessible. Anyone signing up for this game must review the theme tags and content warnings and make sure they're comfortable with at least half of them. We might be relaxed, but this is still an Underdark adventure. I'm aiming for an intense experience for your CHARACTER, but a fun experience for YOU.
If you're someone who wants to play this module without the nitty-gritty hexploration, this is the game for you!
This campaign will take place in a homebrewed setting. For the purposes of character creation, assume the standard D&D Underdark lore.
