Experience: Been roleplaying for a long time, with over a year of D&D 5e experience as player and DM. Ideally, I would like players that are versed enough in the game to know how to make and utilize their character properly.
Location/Timezone: I'm based in the greater New York City area, so the timezone is EST. The "Game Clock" will be determined after recruitment.
Schedule: Always live.
Roles sought: Players (Up to six to start, depending upon level of experience with the game.)
Game style: A little bit of everything. The setting will be mature. Please be eighteen years of age or older. As a DM I am usually comfortable toning it down for more sensitive players, however, there will be no limits placed on player actions.
Hi there, I'm Swan! I love Dungeons & Dragons, but honestly, sort of over all the dungeons and the dragons. Quests to slay evil wizards and save damsels aren't really my deal. So what is my deal? Trying to create unique and different experiences within the rules of D&D.
This campaign will be "always live" in Discord. As a player, you will be granted full agency to do anything possible within the setting. Always "Yes, and?"
You may be asking how I plan on accomplishing this.
First, there is no party. If the players choose to join forces, they may. Or they may join a faction of NPCs, allied or opposing. Player versus player is allowed (but will be moderated for fairness and prevent any player bullying).
Second, there will be two DMs. Another DM and myself will provide prompts, control the NPCs, and help facilitate player choices. It will be the players' world and our aim to help them explore it's possibilities.
Third, the setting is specific and will require players to find new ways to do many things that are a given in most D&D games. Attaining weapons, armor, and other common items will not necessarily be easy.
Fourth, there isn't really a "campaign." Your character arc is in your hands. What motivates your character beyond being railroaded into fighting hags or questing for magical items?
"But how does all that work?"
Welcome to Salvation's Mouth, a prison in Faerün. There will be no further details regarding the prison itself, be it structure, location, or staff. It is a prison. Life will be hard, brutal things are likely to occur, and the feeling of being safe will probably become a forgotten memory.
I will respond to general questions regarding character creation. No Eberron, M:tG, Critical Role, or outside homebrew. Male, female, or characters that fall anywhere between, are allowed. Currently, all Forgotten Realms races and classes will be allowed. Restrictions may be imposed if something gamebreaking arises, but be aware that creating a more dangerous prisoner (a Monk, Dragonborn, etc.) may have a negative effect on how they are treated by guards and fellow detainees.
Please post a brief character outline including: race, class, the gist of who they are, and how they came to be a convict. They may be a relentless serial killer, or a noble hero tragically framed. Also, please list your level of experience with the game, or roleplaying in general. Once again, this will be a mature game. There will be strong language and disturbing events may unfold. I will follow up with the players that I think best fit via PMs, and would ask that people please do not send me unsolicited messages.
There is no set "expiration date" on recruitment and the server may go live before we have six players. Depending on the flow of the game, we may even be open to more players in the future. Thank you for your interest!
I know you said no outside homebrew, but will you consider homebrew Backgrounds? Also, will characters be created on DNDBeyond, and if so will you be content sharing?
Elkoris a Half-elf bard charlatan, who got caught selling and trading fake goods, he's pretty to himself but he's pretty shady and has got a lot of ears to the ground so to speak (thinking college of whispers)
Zagak a goliath barbarian, who is an ex-mercenary who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he's the classic intimidating prisoner not many want to mess with
I know you said no outside homebrew, but will you consider homebrew Backgrounds? Also, will characters be created on DNDBeyond, and if so will you be content sharing?
I can do content sharing. Character sheets will be made on DDB. I have all the compendium books, as well as several of the adventures. I'd prefer not to allow any player homebrew, as there will be a moderate amount of homebrew items in the setting due to its nature.
Sounds pretty interesting and i have moderate experience with DnD i believe. been on a server for it for about half a year and been making char sheets for about a year.
Dalaman a Half-Elf Warlock(Great old one) Entertainer. Who was found at the scene of a robbery and was found as the only suspect. He's very quiet normally but sometimes hums a little tune. I like giving physical descriptions so here we go. He's five foot four and his eyes are blue and green. and his hair is scruffy and silvery white. He doesn't look too physically strong but looks pretty lithe.
Lonnel has spent his youth learning the merchant trade under his parents. Following their unfortunate passing, Lonnel found himself in the employment of a band of shady sailors whose less than legal method of acquiring goods finally caught up to him.
Sounds great, the wife and i are interested. lets us know what you need. discord is ormfang.
There aren't really "needed" characters in terms of Class. It's in the players hands. If any player would prefer not to pick Class until asking the other players what they're picking/considering, that's totally cool.
Part of the reason for the lack of details on the prison itself is to avoid minmaxing. I would prefer that players designed characters as they would normally, brainstorming before a session zero. This isn't the typical game where everybody starts as buddies in a tavern. Not many people prepare for a life of incarceration.
I've been playing D&D, mostly as DM, since the 90s.
Oracle is a tiefling bard. They are a eunuch - a castrati with a beautiful singing voice, who once served as caretaker and companion for a young noblewoman in Waterdeep. When Oracle tried to protect their charge by running interference between her and a determined but villainous suitor, they found themselves targeted with accusations, rumours and fearmongering and were soon expelled from the household. Oracle found the outside world very difficult for a tiefling eunuch, but they managed to get by on their charm and wit, and made their way as a fortune teller. Once again, however, they found that their nature made them an easy scapegoat. When a fortune they gave led to an aristocrat gambling away his fortunes, Oracle was blamed for being in on the scheme. The fact that it was true doesn't make it a just punishment to be sent to the hell of Salvation's Mouth prison! Life in prison is also hard, but here Oracle has found a modicum of respect for their strange nature, their talent, their "wisdom" and their fortune telling. Oracle makes the best of their situation, putting on airs, dressing and decorating their cell as flamboyantly as possible, and pretending that they are exactly where they wish to be, but they nevertheless dream of returning to the luxury and the intrigues of a noble household.
I'm fairly new to d&d but I'm definitely not new to text based roleplay.
I was thinking of playing a Goblin warlock who's holy bond is with the Goddess of luck and good fortune, Tymora. Jimp is different than the other Goblins, he's a wholesome lad who doesn't really wish to fight people. But like all goblins, Jimp loves shiny stuff.. and one night he couldn't help himself. Jimp snagged a few gems from a shopkeeper and was caught by the city guard. Luckily, his silver tongue landed him in jail instead of getting killed on the spot.
Hey, this sounds interesting. My name's David, I've got about a year of 5E under my belt as a player on roll20 with some friends. I did one session as a DM and it went really well. I'm really intrigued by the 'there are no parties' aspect of this. I do have a human monk ready to go at level 1 (point buy) if you pick me to play.
His name is Krakin Flurryfist. He was given away to a monastery by his parents when he was very young. He's always shown promise but his attitude sometimes got in his way. He tends to overreact and get himself into trouble, although he always feels like he can get himself out again. At the monastery they held a tournament that anyone could attend. In front of all of his peers and the entire village and surrounding area he gave even his sensei a run for his money, but did ultimately lose.
One evening while strolling through town he saw a beggar being harassed by some guards. Overeager, perhaps, he ran up to the nearest guard and kicked him in the head. The guard fell awkwardly, onto some slick stairs and down them, breaking his neck. This guard was the son of a great noble house in the village and Krakin was sentenced to prison.
Sounds enticing enough to offer up an unfortunate inquisitor who mistakenly assaulted some random noble in the plaza. Infused as he is with paranoid feelings, he begins to suspect that maybe a conspiracy has landed him in jail. He believes that "they're" out to get him for secrets he heard while performing his craft. His name is Nash Finch and he's certainly gonna get to the bottom of this.
I'm a newbie but this does sound interesting I've played mmorpgs but never d&d, I have 2 characters
Pike a juggernaut warforged fighter he got involved in a gang war which resulted in 15 innocent deaths (2 of his own) and was sold out by an old friend, he's blunt and doesn't have much common sense. But he isn't stupid more street savvy then book smarts.
Uresh Stoneroot a Half-Orc druid a bit of a bleeding heart he was traveling when a storehouse along the road caught fire with the inhabitants inside he came to their aid but failed to save a young man he was charged and sentenced.
I would be interested in joining your campaign. I have a level 4 Human Rogue, Female Pirate character named Annabella that has yet to see the light of roleplay. I think she would fit your campaign concept nicely. I love the idea of an ongoing Discord text based campaign. Im currently running my own Discord Text based campaign and I love it. Im DM for that one. I have played a lot of DnD but havent played as a character for about 6 months. I have yet to play as a Rogue so I'm excited to try it out.
I have Annabella's character sheet here on DnDBeyond if you want to see her.
Annabella was a Merchant's daughter who was taken by a band of pirates as a child when her father couldn't pay his debts. She grew up proving herself as an excellent fighter and skilled pirate. She has the constant drive to prove her worth. 8 months ago, however, she survived a shipwreck that killed most of her pirate family and separated her from the rest. Since then she has been a land pirate.... outlaw... using her skills on land to acquire wealth and goods to eventually buy or steal her own ship and crew. She became a wanted outlaw due to these adventures and was recently captured and imprisoned. She doesnt believe she will be here long.
Let me know if Annabella would be a good fit for your campaign!
This sounds really interesting. So I'll offer up a character to Salvation's Mouth.
Saerith Telaza, a drow rogue, is the youngest daughter of a fairly power house in the underdark. She was trained from birth to defend her home from the surface and from the monsters of the underdark. After an attack on her scouting party that left her wounded, a fellow drow tried to finish the job to ensure that Saerith did not advance any further in rank. She survived the assassination and eventually mad it to the surface, finding the underwear no longer welcoming. On the surface she has worked as a scout, thief, as well as a hired killer when called for. Her most recent job, an assassination of a minor noble of waterdeep put her in Salvation's Mouth.
I'd love to join, this style of D&D is the only way I can really play since I don't have a group or set days off from work - my schedule is different every week. I've started another campaign with another group of 5e players but beyond that I don't have 5e experience, lots and lots of 4e, Pathfinder and especially 3.5 though.
My character concept is a gnome wizard named Rolf Stebbens who seeks knowledge and power, though much like the illusion spells he favors his bark is worse than his bite. He has a curmudgeonly attitude and is usually quite curt as he spent years learning the arts of alchemy under a dwarven master, taking on some of their gruff mannerisms in the process. But in an attempt to merge his two crafts, illusion magic and alchemy, an accident occurred. Showing off his wares, he was attempting to display a sort of firework he had come up with, alchemist's fire that exploded with simple sparks and an illusory flame. During the demonstration, however, he accidentally set the alchemist's fire off along with the rest of his stash of the explosive stuff, killing and burning bystanders. He survived and was placed in prison for his reckless magic, which he now seeks to refine and hone into true magical prowess.

FYI - This campaign started up a year ago and quickly fizzled due to the DM's time constraints. Not sure if/when it will be active ever again.

I would love to be in on this! I've got a tiefling barbarian w/ a gladiator background that would be really interesting in this scenario
