Hello everyone! My name is Leah, and I will be your DM in this brand new adventure set in the world created by Matt Mercer: Exandria! More specifically, the continent of Wildemount.
Wildemount is a continent brewing with political intrigue, a dark past in its history and opportunities for adventurers as issues tend to arise in every corner, even after a brief moment of peace! We will start our journey through this world and continue for as long as the players are willing to go!
About the Game
I am a roleplayer, first and foremost, so any and all of my games will be catered to roleplayers who wish to develop their backstories, create new stories with new friends, and feel as part of the world. However, it must be said that these stories also feature combat, so I always try to keep it balanced as much as possible. However... there might be sessions that go entirely without combat. So, if you're looking for a game that will feature endless dungeon-crawls and sessions with 7 combat encounters, this game is not for you.
However, if you're looking for a place to engage into meaningful storylines, to feel as part of the world that is being created and create an epic tale of your own together with your party mates, this might just be the game for you!
I will be using the Explorer's Guide to Wildemount as the basis, and I will sometimes be reusing NPCs that were made famous by Matt Mercer in his stories with the Mighty Nein, but keep in mind, I am not him! This will be our own story to tell. This campaign will not follow the footsteps of the Mighty Nein (you won't be doing the same things), but while they are taking care of their own things, there are other issues brewing in the world that needs other adventurers to step up and become heroes!
I will try my best to avoid referring to things that happened in Campaign 2 of Critical Role for those who have yet to catch-up. All you will need to know is that there has been war, and peace was brokered with the help of the Mighty Nein, as I'm setting our campaign after that fragile peace was achieved.
We are running with the milestone system! Always!
This game will run every Tuesday at 7pm EST., using Roll20 for battlemaps and Discord for voice. We will run for 4 hours (never more than 4 however, unless we're in the middle of a big combat scene or something similar), with a 10 minute break in between. The starting date is a placeholder - we will start as soon as we get 5 players.
About the DM
I’m 30+ years old (Never ask a lady her age, heh...!!!), I have over 15 years of roleplaying experience, and have been playing D&D 5e since 2017. I am very experienced with the rules and willing to help new players and I welcome those veterans that have been at this for longer than I have! Keep in mind that while I do follow the rules, no one can possibly know everything, so I will consult the player’s handbook or the dungeon master’s guide if I feel something is not quite right. I have a few (very few though) homebrew rules that I like to adopt, and I will often allow the 'rule of cool', within limits, of course. However, the rule of cool doesn't mean that players will be able to break the rules left and right: I am very fair in my rulings and I like to run the games as smoothly as possible, but rules exist for a reason and they keep games from becoming impossible to run!
If you are a fan of shows like Critical Role, welcome to the club - this is why I decided to use Wildemount as our setting, because I am passionate about the world that Matt and his friends brought to us! It was that kind of immersive experience that got me into this game to begin with. I will work with you to flesh out your backstory and try to integrate it as much as I can to the world around us. However, keep in mind: I am no Matt Mercer. That said, I also don't expect my players to be Liam O'Brian or Taliesin Jaffe! So all good, as long as we know where our expectations are!
I love storytelling, and some of my favorite moments as a DM come as I see my players interacting with things and situations I bring them, or even interacting with one another. I try to flesh out NPCs (even those that come with no backstory at all), enough that they become part of my players world as much as possible. That's what I like about this game, after all!
I am NOT a roll20 wizard, though I am very advanced in my knowledge and will help you build your character sheet and instruct on its features if needed. I do plan on using dynamic lighting and fog of war (depending on the map, I will use them interchangeably).
About the Rules
Character Creation:
We start at lvl 2! Cause lvl 1 is a toughie!
Stats: Players can choose to roll 4d6, dropping the lowest, and rerolling if the total sum is below 72. Or they can choose to go with Point buy if they don't wish to roll. Either/or however. Though of course, if you end up rolling stats that would make you a farmer, we can work things out.
What is allowed for classes? All sourcebooks (Including Tasha's Guide to Everything) for spells and classes are allowed. All Explorer's Guide to Wildemount classes can be allowed, of course! I allow Blood Hunter and Gunslinger, from Matt Mercer's Homebrew. However, keep in mind gunpowder isn't easy to achieve and so a Gunslinger might have issues fabricating their own bullets.
No UA, only published material
Multiclassing is allowed, but must be justified. I don't mind multiclassing, as long as it makes sense for a character's storyline progression and/or backstory . So if you want to multiclass, all you need to do is explain, either through your backstory or through actions that you plan on pursue in game, why your character will take levels in another class. A soldier doesn’t suddenly wake up and pick up a spellbook and becomes a wizard after all. There's training and study to be done to become a wizard. The same as a wizard doesn't suddenly learn Thieves' Cant and picks up a rapier to gain levels in Rogue. Bottomline is: multiclassing for the sake of multiclassing, or to create that 'omg this is broken' character that will 'win the game' isn't something I will allow. In a collaborative storytelling game as the one I aim to achieve, having the 'most broken' character isn't the goal, but interacting and building a story is.
What is allowed for Races? All Sourcebooks except setting-specific ones such as Eberron, Ravnica or Theros are allowed. However, I am flexible if my players have a super good idea despite the limitations, and I'd like to make some considerations:
Some races might be alright even if they're part of those books, such as Changelings. So check with me to see if your idea can be done.
Warforged don't really fit in my storyline. So while there is a tale of constructs existing and having some semblance of sentience in Matt's world (hello Doty?), they're very rare, and it wouldn't make sense for one to be out and about and becoming an adventurer without some loops or roundabouts that would make it hard to adapt their storyline. So I'm not allowing them for this reason. This is non-negotiable.
Explorer's Guide to Wildemount races are allowed as well, of course! Bring forward your Dragonborn with darkvision if you so wish (because it's silly they don't have it to begin with, in my opinion).
I have my personal restrictions about Kenku in roleplaying games due to the nature of their race, so I tend to avoid bringing them into my game unless you have a very good way of explaining how you’ll bypass their limitations. If you have that fantastic Kenku idea that you really want to run, and you think you can successfully roleplay them despite the race limitations, we can definitely talk about it!
Races like Yuan-ti, Lizardfolk and Shadar-Kai must have a very compelling backstory in order to bypass the emotionless aspect of the races. Same as above. They're not a 'hard no', it's just going to take a little more effort for me to see that you can pull it off on a roleplaying level.
All in all, bottom line is: if unsure, PM me or ask a question on the “ask a question” thread below
Everyone gets a lvl 1 feat! So that means, no variant humans allowed.
No homebrew! This is very important. I don't allow homebrew in my games, mostly because I don't really like having to be checking for balance with every single level. So only official races, classes and spells are allowed, because I know them, have played them, and am comfortable with them enough to know they will not (most of the times) break the game.
No evil characters. Period. Not allowed. No "Chaotic Stupid" either. The whole "It's what my character would do" excuse doesn't fly well with me, and I will not hesitate to kick a player from my table if they demonstrate this kind of behavior.
Player Behavior
This is the VERY FIRST DISCLAIMER: **This is an LGBTQ+ friendly group**. I will not tolerate any sort of prejudice, discrimination or racism. LGBTQ+ players AND characters are welcome here.
Treat your fellow player with respect. It's the minimum we can ask!
While the nature of playing-over-voice is tricky, please make sure not to talk over one another.
No in-party conflict that isn't justified or cannot be resolved in character and bring some sort of character growth. No 'murdering your party members while they sleep'. No OOC conflict either: if you have a problem with a fellow player's behavior, please contact me in private.
As a DM, I have the final say in rules and what I allow or will not allow. Please don't go against that. I follow the rules as written most of the times, so we should be good, but... if you have an issue with one of my rulings, please bring it to me in private and I will listen and we can discuss things.
If you miss three sessions in a row without any explanation, I will be forced to remove you from the game and search for a replacement
What is expected from you?
You are at least 18 years old (sorry, that is non-negotiable).
Players are expected to show up on time
Players must be respectful of their fellow players.
Must have a Discord username, as we will be using Discord for voice
Must have a decent microphone.
If you are to miss a session, please give me at least 24 hours of warning so I can prepare. There's a lot of time that goes into planning each session. Of course, emergencies are understood, but as much as possible, if you miss, please let me know!
This is a paid game!!
Why pay, you say?
There are many reasons, none of them is for my own profit. One of them being that it takes a lot of effort and time to prepare each session, and a paid game makes it so that the game becomes more reliable for both myself, and you as a player. Reliable for you because I am here to give you a gaming experience and I will be here every week, on time, to do so, and I will spend part of my off-work time to prepare the sessions and adapt the written adventures around my players.
It's also reliable for me as people that spend their real-life money on a game are more likely to show up every week and on time, as it's money out of their pocket! So I as a DM get people that will be more committed and willing to play.
This also helps me keep my Roll20 Pro account where I can try to use all the features available and given to me by Roll20 (I'm not in the US, and currency exchange is completely crazy now and having a Pro account and being able to buy books means that I'd have to spend a LOT of money of my own). Though fair disclaimer: Dynamic Lighting is a pain in SOME maps, and in that case, I might opt for Fog of War instead
The sessions will be $10, paid either before or after the session (your choice), via PayPal.
Session 0 will be free so we can discuss rules, character ideas, get to know one another, etc!
If you miss a session, you don't have to pay. If I by any chance have to miss a session, of course, no one has to pay!
I like all I'm reading here! I'm ready! Now what?
Now you apply!
Now, considering that I really love when backstories come up in game, I don't follow the "post your application here" format. I'd rather have the applications be sent in a private manner. That's why I created this Google Forms with all the information that I need.
Keep in mind that despite this being a paid game, I will choose players according to their responses to my questions: it's not going to be first-come, first-serve. This questionnaire will allow me to trim down the players that I think will be a good fit for the type of game I'm aiming to run, and that will enjoy the type of DMing I am looking forward to bringing to the table. So even if you see this post open for a while, don't hesitate to send me the answers, because I will be choosing quality over quantity here.
I will be sending Discord invites to those that I think will be a good fit, so we can have an initial one-on-one interview before I send them permanent invites.
I am not taking any applications unless they're using my form. If you do have questions that aren't specified in my post, feel free to PM me here or post on this thread.
I hope to have you at my table! Looking forward to building amazing stories together!
