Hello world-builders, I'm looking for people interested in creating their own worlds in a westmarch style server. Distinct worlds and civilizations connected by arcane streams with over-arching campaign storylines, world-building events. I'm looking right now for dynamic DMs, new to the DM world, or experienced veterans, preferably globe-spanning to provide gaming opportunities for people in all time zones and work schedules.
The Discord server will operate with a PG-13 flare, explicitly SAFE for work, and be very inclusive and accepting of all IRL and character uniqueness. Friendly and welcoming are key words and fundamentals.
DMs have the opportunity to create their own unique worlds, with their own world story arcs and lore. Those worlds' stories and lore can interact with other worlds' by other DMs, or they can be "islands," which only operate with a tenuous connection with the other worlds, in that some characters appear in both on occasion. They can be very D&D-lore-heavy, or totally homebrew, throwing away all the lore of the published materials.
Characters will be made by standard array or point buy -- no rolling and re-rolling for characters. I have found this imbalance to player creation leads to disharmony on other servers, as rogue factions of high-rolled characters band together and sabotage other players' fun in games. Because some players are used to servers where they play mini-gods, players can choose one free feat to start their character with -- an arcane blessing that has chosen them to be adventurers, shall we say. Yes, human variant will get two feats. That might mean more humans start populating the world.
DMs who create their own worlds with story arcs can control what is allowed from other worlds into their own. DMs should have free will to grant players rewards and treasure how they see fit based on the world they create, but not every DM needs to accept everything unique into their world. If a world has the optional firearms available used in it, and another DM does not -- the firearms go into the character sheet's Other Equipment if the player wishes to play in the non-firearm world. If a DM is very generous with magic items and/or gold, and another DM is not -- plays more AD&D with guarded principals towards handing out magic and wealth -- the conservative DM can set rules as to how much gold characters of particular levels can enter that DM's world with, and can curate the PC's magic item collection to what is reasonable in that DM's world. All excess goes into the player sheet as other equipment, to be used in worlds where it is allowed.
This is to maintain harmony among the DMs, but also to provide equal play among players in games of different worlds. We want the characters to have their own stories and arcs. Maybe piling on massive wealth and obscene magical item vaults is it for some players, and they will never venture out of certain worlds because of that, but it's clear that many players prefer the role play aspect of a game, and the challenge of keeping a character alive and growing despite obstacles, and using its own abilities, rather than "magicking it better." It my be clear what my bias is as a player there. :-)
Sources for the server will be limited to ONLY official WoTC PUBLISHED material. DND Beyond will be the official only way to create character sheets. Any way to play, including Roll20 and such, will be optional to the DM. PbP, Roll20, or any other virtual tabletop is acceptable ways to play. Experience granted will be solely to a DM's discretion as we start. Either based on time in session, or challenge rating, etc, or amount of role play and character development that has occured. DM's prerogative.
DMs will be expected to remain active RPing in the text channels, as well as running sessions weekly if not more often.
There are two levels of DMs I am looking to add: World Builders, and game-only DMs. World builders will create their unique worlds on the server, and set the scene for the story arc of the world, add to the lore, and try to keep their world active and growing. They can then have game-only DMs running one-shots or campaigns in their world, run NPC interactions on their behalf in text channels, and other tasks. Not every DM wants to create a world -- they just want to run occasional sessions or campaigns. Speaking of which, closed campaigns are fine, but should be balanced with open sessions and campaigns to push the world's story forward while allowing players to roll some dice.
If you are interested in helping me form this server by building a unique world on it, as a game-running DM, or on the technical organization, send me a private message here, please.
