Would you hire a player for your group to help out in your game - Multiple Choice
Hello there,
And yes, a paid player. Really? Yes really.
I have been playing rp's an Larp's for over 30 years now, and i have played many a game.
Since good DM's are hard to find i truly understand their request to get paid.
As every DM knows, sometimes it is hard to get good players. The ones that prepare into every detail of their character, Their background story, behaviors, morals and of course their quirks. I will convers with the player and inspire them to play their roles, explore their characters. And i'll be 'in character' for most of the session.
I can be an extension of you as the DM. or i can be that player that makes games fun or even funny, if you so wish.
I will go trough my character with you. I can initiate plots or storylines for you to make your already hard task easier.
I will write the recap of what happened in the last session, so you or i can recap at the start of a new session.
As i am experimenting with this setup, likely as one of the first paid players my pricing will be fair, But that will be details to go over later.
I hope to hear from you soon. (Both good/bad feedback is appreciated) please vote in the poll.
Kind regards
Loki
Withdrawn, I can't find a way to explain my feelings about this situation without tacitly commending or condemning it.
Hello there Silvercoins,
So what was the feeling when the first DM did this?
That may help you to see folly or options. I know this might be a completely new thing. And yes it may seem odd, But if it helps set up a list of pro's and con's.
It took me a long time on even deciding i would try this.
So i am taking a shot at this, and therefore i added the poll, to see what people think about it. So if you have any new options to be added to the poll, feel free to make the suggestion.
Sadly i cant see what you posted before you withdrew it but feel free to re add it so i can get the initial feelings you had when reading the post.
Kind regards,
Loki
This post was originally from a DM conversation I had with OP and has been moved into the thread for the sake of conversation.
Hey there,
I think you really would like to build this idea up and are looking for legitimate feedback. Here are the posts I put up before my third that is currently up. In my first, I was pretty harsh on the idea and in the second I really gave some time to think about it. As of right now, I still have mixed feelings so I'd like to leave a neutral public response to encourage others to reply there, but here's my thinking:
Post #1 (about a day ago)
Hello~
So, I've kinda justified paying a DM to myself because I know how much work goes in behind the scenes. The voices and acting are cool, but the actual planning of the campaign and logistics is realistically what I wouldn't mind paying for. The pacing, loot distribution, combat, etc all have to be balanced. For that, I'd go up to 25$ a session for something really phenomenal.
Having said that, there is no dollar amount that I am comfortable paying a player to play because of that uneven personal investment.
The DM has a vested interest in continuing the campaign they spend many unpaid hours working on before getting paid to actually run it and are thus much less likely to leave. The paid player has nothing to lose by leaving mid-session beyond a bad review on some random forum and the in-game time they've spent, which they would have already been paid for.
Or at least, that's my opinion. I wouldn't like vote to make it illegal or anything, I support people spending their time and money all sorts of ways I don't agree with, but for me personally I wouldn't "hire" a player for those reasons.
Thank you,
Silvercoins
Post #2 (About 10 hours later)
Hello~
I think most of the people that are willing to pay for a DM's services are in large part seeking the logistics behind hosting a game. Stuff like balancing and the right versus wrong kinds of railroads, etc. less so than the actual physical act of DMing a game. That includes rolling dice, funny voices, etc.
Yet, I admit that some fair points have been made to me about the state of the game as a community.
On both sides, DnD players by and large are in search of people who know what they're doing. I find it interesting that rather than learning and spreading those skills, our response, by and large, was to commodify good DM's and consequently accept pay to play as just something that happens in DnD.
You're ahead of the pack, if anything, and I really do hope you develop this into something that works. If you figure out a model that can be replicated successfully, you'll start a whole new trend.
Thank you,
Silvercoins
Overall, the state of the game is such that we've accepted paying to play as something that happens in DnD and while I may not personally like it, Supply grows to meet Demand so I'd encourage you to keep trying to make it a thing even though I personally wouldn't hire a player.
Thanks!
Silvercoins
Thank you for doing that!
I really appreciate it

Loki
