I posted this in the story and lore forums, but I thought this could fit here to, so here it goes
I'm trying to make a way of the open-palm monk. With a highly bubbly personality to hide his raging daddy issues. Beyond that, I haven't got a clue about how to make a character that isn't blander than unbuttered toast. I need your help making him fun to play as and not annoying to the rest of the party. any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advanced
Don’t know if this helps but when I’m not sure about a character I think why are they there? As a DM if someone wanted to play an evil/chaotic character I’d ask why they are part of the group? If there’s no good answer then why play them? I know that doesn’t really apply directly but why is your monk travelling? Are they looking for enlightenment? Trying to find forgiveness in their heart for daddy issues? What motivates them?
my first character was a monk and they were human and I left them open for development, they ended up being super bland. Eventually I decided they enjoyed travelling to see places they’d only read about in monasteries. He already had skill in cartography so liked maps, this gave him some character and a reason to be there.
what you could do is have the character not know any fighting ability whatsoever, instead the spirit of a former kung fu master is in him and makes his body move when he wants to. think jackie chan ish style in terms of roleplay. so when he uses flurry of blows he looks at his fist as if to say "why did my body move on its own." then looks at the knockedout enemy more confused. as time in the campain passes he will slowly become better and in whichever direction you wish. hope that helps. :)
