I am planning to play a Damphir Long Death Monk in a 1-20 Spelljammer campaign and I want to take a 2-level multiclass dip with her to get martial weapons, but I am having trouble deciding what to multiclass into.
Her backstory is she was a Wildspacer, her ship was taken by Vampirates and she was bitten and captured. The prisoners revolted and tried to take back the ship but failed and she had to walk the plank and was left adrift in wildspace. However because her transformation had started she did not need to breath and did not die. She drifted for hundreds of years until she ran into one of the Dead God asteroids where she stayed for may more years until being rescued by a passing ship. Her ordeal caused her to be obsessed with death and the study of death. Her multiclass represents her former profession.
My starting stats after bonuses are S13 D16 C13 W17 I8 CH8
As far as progression, I will start as the multiclass, then go 6 levels of Monk, then a 2nd level in the dip, then to Monk 12. I am not sure after that, maybe all Monk, maybe 2 more levels in the dip. As far as feats go I can afford one half feat without falling behind. I am thinking about Fey Touched at level 4 or depending on any magic weapons we find I might get piercer at level 8 (my Vampiric bite is a piercing monk weapon).
Death Cleric is the most thematic with her backstory, however I am playing a Death Cleric dip right now and I am kind of worn out on it. The idea of Death Cleric would be some light healing, Turn Undead and the Death Cleric's awesome twinned cantrip ability for ranged attacks with Chill touch or Toll The Dead, martial weapon proficiency and PEG, shield of faith and sanctuary as combat buffs. In terms of power I think this has the most to go for it, especially at high level since those cantrips scale with character level. 8d12 on TTD is pretty awesome.
Barbarian would give 2 rages a day and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage with Rage. I would not be using strength for attacks much, so the other Rage benefits would not be used much, but the 2nd level advantage on dex saves would work well with evasion. If I end up going 4 levels I could get Zealot, Elk or Bear Totem which all offer some great buffs.
Fighter would give action surge at 2nd level which would work well with hour of reaping - run out ahead, do hour of reaping, then action surge and figure out who to attack. Fighting style would be blind fighting. If I end up going 4 levels I would probably go Eldritch Knight and grab Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade in addition to Silvery Barbs, Shield and Protection from Evil and Good.
