I’m in a campaign currently and I’m playing a way of the long death half orc and started multiclassing into barbarian. I wanted to go path of the beast which is in Tashas and I just had some questions on how the claws interact with the monks bonus action attack and flurry of blows. Would I be able to use the claws on flurry of blows in order to get 5 attacks total? Or would I just have to use a different form of attacking for flurry of blows.
I'm assuming by your question that you picked up extra attack as a long death monk.
Yes, you can get 5 attacks between claws and fist using flurry of blows. Flurry of blows does not have any prerequisites for what weapon you use. So you can triple claw and then spend a ki point to do two unarmed strikes as a bonus action.
The martial arts bonus action attack is a little different. You have to make at least one attack with a monk weapon in your attack action to get the bonus action attack. Three things to note here: you only have to make one attack with the claw to get an extra claw attack, either hand can be used to make the claw attack and you can take a hand off of a weapon as a free action and maintain a hold on it. So, the sequence is this: Two hands on quarterstaff attack, drop hand, claw with open hand, claw again, bonus action unarmed attack. You can also just use an unarmed strike instead of the staff, or do the claws first and then put your second hand on the staff to attack. This will give you four attacks all the time with the option of getting a fifth using ki.
Interesting multiclass. Not one I had considered. Sounds very fun
Yea sorry forgot to say what my levels were. I’m level 6 monk and level 2 barbarian. I was wondering if the claws would count as monk weapons since they are simple weapons according to the book.
It’s been really fun with reckless attacks, savage attacks (half-orc trait) and the orcish fury feat I’m able to do a lot of damage in one turn and I’m a pretty good off tank thanks to the touch of death ability and my rage.
I was hoping you went to monk 6 before the MC :) Long Death and Kensei are my favorite monks (only ones I like actually). That level 6 fear effect is so cool. And touch of death THP combined with rage resistance. Chef's kiss. And you're doing all that orc stuff. Stop it. This character sounds so dope.
You know, I completely forgot about the new Monk optional feature that lets you turn a non monk weapon into a monk weapon. Had to look it up to see if it works.
From Dedicated Weapon:
Whenever you finish a short or long rest, you can touch one weapon, focus your ki on it, and then count that weapon as a monk weapon until you use this feature again.
I believe the answer is yes, but at a cost. And not one I would want to pay if I was in your place. The problem is your natural weapons are only active during your rage and you have to touch the weapon in question to make it a monk weapon. I believe you could rage at the end of your rest and then use this ability on a claw. I don't think that's worth a rage and a ki though.
I think it's best to simply split attacks with a quarterstaff, spear or unarmed strikes.
Personally I would be so tempted to go bear totem on a build like this. That touch of death + resistance has me drooling. But path of the beast offers something different entirely and is very exciting thematically. And it's powerful. 4-5 attacks every round is no joke.
Edit: I just had a really cool thought. If your DM is open to allowing the battlerager for non-dwarven races this could be oddly amazing. The battlerager has one of the few bonus action attacks that does not require a previous action of some kind. This means you can use your action to cause mass fear and then bonus action smack someone in the mouth with your armor spikes and maintain your rage. FEAR RAGE. Wearing armor is certainly not perfect on a monk, but that combination seems weirdly potent. And just so cool. I could definitely see an orcish tradition of fighting with spiked armor.
