I saw a post over on the Looking For Group subforum and saw a post saying they don't know how to play and would like to learn. I figured I might make a thread open to everyone where I run through the basics of PBP, and maybe run a fight or two so people can get their feet wet.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
So first off, what is Play by Post (PBP)? Essentially, it's a format for roleplaying games where the DM and players post when-they-can rather than meeting up at a set time. It can be done with an app like Discord, or on a forum like the one here. This forum has the nice ability to roll dice built into it. I just used the little die icon with three pips to write the syntax for rolling 1d20 (one twenty-sided die), it's a pretty useful feature:
17
Note that going back and editing your post may have it marked as you having modified your rolls!
EDIT: I just tried to sneakily modify my roll. The forum probably is going to catch this and give a warning!

Yes just like that!
Attack rolls are more complicated, but the dice button automates a lot of that too. Play around with it a bit, here I'm rolling an attack with a +5 to hit that does 1d4+3 damage on a hit (more on a critical hit):
Ah right to look at your character sheet, at least on the website go up to the "Collections" tab and select "My Characters". Then select the "View" button under the character that you made. (If you haven't made a character yet, make one now.)
Oh okay, so depending on the DM they may be okay with you rolling on your character sheet (in which case you can just click, for example, the box with you modifier next to a skill to roll it) and that can be recorded in a campaign your character has joined, so that might be easier than messing with the dice button on the forum.
Roll Athletics, and tell me what you rolled. I might say something like, "The DC (difficulty class) of succeeding is 15", in which case if you roll a 15 or higher you succeeded at doing whatever you were trying to do, and if it's less you do not succeed.

Good! In that case you succeed on the check. The DM would tell you what that means in that particular context. You can also click the modifiers for your saves and your attacks to roll them.
Let's have a short fight with a goblin. So the first thing that happens when combat starts is everyone involved rolls Initiative. Click the Initiative modifier to roll.
I'll roll for the goblin:
Goblin's Initiative: 6 (1d20+2)
Tell me what you got. If it's higher than the goblin's, you act first, and if it's lower, the goblin acts first.
Hi all!

More to come!
I'm here :)

cool2 is this how you do it?
So Jorneir, I know you have a character ready. Let's start by having you roll a skill check, specifically Athletics.
Look on your character sheet, and see what your Athletics modifier is. You will then roll 1d20+<MOD>, where <MOD> is your skill's modifier.
For example, if I had a character with +5 in athletics, I can go to the dice button, roll a d20 and have it add +5 to the result.
So like this: Athletics (9)
so how do i look at the character sheet?
Yes just like that!

I don't understand

wait, i have to do something
Sorry, I may be going a bit too fast. What isn't clear?
kinda, im viewing the sheet now
so what do i do now
Gotcha. Take your time, I'll wait. : )
what do i do now, im looking at the sheet

i rolled a 19

i got an 11 :(
That's okay, this is all just a demonstration. : )
So the goblin is going to attack you with it's scimitar. This attack has +4 to hit, and on a hit it does 1d6+2 damage.
Here, let's see how that goes: Attack: 16 Damage: 8
If the result of Attack is greater than or equal to your AC (Armor Class), you take the Damage. Otherwise, it's a miss. Let's see what happens!
