Seeking 2-3 4th level adventurers to join a campaign in progress! Dragon fire threatens to consume Faerûn! Do you dare oppose the Cult of the Dragon and resist the might of Tiamat, Queen of Dragons?
Read through the rest of this post thoroughly, and if you are interested, follow the instructions to apply.
About The Adventure:
- Setting: The Forgotten Realms (Faerûn)
- This adventure is equal parts roleplay, combat, and exploration.
- Hoard of the Dragon Queen is a half-length campaign. Games of this length typically take 2-3 years in this format. Please do not apply if you believe there is a chance that you cannot commit to this length of time.
- You only need to commit to Hoard of the Dragon Queen. I do plan to roll forward into Rise of Tiamat, its sequel campaign, but you do not need to commit to the entirety of the Tyranny of Dragons campaign.
About The DM & House Rules:
- I run a number of campaigns on this site, and have many years of experience DMing both in person and online. I have run PbP adventures that last a few months, and some that have been ongoing for years. This adventure has been in progress for almost 3 years now.
- My typical pace is to resolve actions and advance the adventure once each day or two. When you apply, please send me a PM that includes the word “Blagothkus” to ensure the player I select is attentive to others' posts and reads them thoroughly.
- I want PbP to be simple and flow easily. To accomplish this, I do not use grids, and I use grouped initiative to reduce the need to wait on players to post in a specific order.
- I do not use any averages. All health and damage is rolled, for both players and monsters. All of my rolls are made using the forum dice roller for visibility.
- Characters can die in my campaigns. Though it has not happened often, I do not fudge rolls. Reckless actions (i.e., charging headlong into an army) do have realistic consequences.
How To Apply:
- If you are any less than absolute certain that you can commit to completing this adventure (a period of a few years), please do not apply.
- Rolling for stats is preferred, but Standard Array and Point Buy are also accepted for determining ability scores. See below about guidelines on rolling.
- Reply to this thread or send me a PM with your application. Please include the 1) race/class you would like to play, 2) a short background summary, and 3) your method of determining ability scores (include rolls if rolling).
- All content used must be available to you through D&D Beyond. No Unearthed Arcana or homebrew will be accepted.
- If you are rolling for stats, those rolls must be made here or in a PM. Re-rolling your array will only be allowed if there are no ability scores above 13. There are no other exceptions. If you are not comfortable with that risk, please use the Standard Array or Point Buy. To make those rolls, use [ roll ] 4d6dl1 [ /roll ] (without the spaces). Do not re-roll 1s. I don't know if people do this accidentally or if they do it to try and sneak it by me, but it happens a lot. I do examine all rolls.
- Your character's backstory can be as light or heavy as you would like, but I will be working with you to tailor the backstory to the setting of this campaign, so be open to adjusting bits and pieces.
- To help ease your character into the story, your backstory should eventually answer two questions at a minimum (I can work on the specifics with you): 1) What brought you to the city of Elturel on the Sword Coast, and 2) How do you know representatives of the Harpers and the Order of the Gauntlet?
Oh oh oh. What i read in your post is exactly how i like games to be run and would love to join here. Fan of rolling and consequences i am. I try to DM myself and it sometimes gets a little Blagothkus if you know what i mean. Maybe you can be my first dungeon master. (what i mean by that is that i would be novice player but have some experience DMing so i like to think that i know how to play :P)
Application: (Please do have in mind i am posting it all before i see the rolls that are rolled here. Might seem risky but i believe it goes well with your dm style and if my char dies early, well that happens if life gave you weak stats :P should have stayed home farming beetroots)
1. Race: Human (that would be my go to race but sometimes i think about half-orc character. anyway i could do something different if for example every other member was a dwarf and we would have nice idea for party of dwarf cousins or something)
2. Class: Warlock (I think about warlocks a lot and have man ideas how they can go as not murder hobos and how they can play along with party well not being cringy. Well thought warlock i think gives me great role play opportunities. Other than that i think Warrior is great for role playing since it is not complicated class and you have to make up for it with role play :) otherwise i could play anything but druids, they are somehow not appealing to me.)
3. Rolling for Ability scores is my jam: 1281016149
4. Backstory: I will build it up after i would know my stats since i think about a character a little bit in the light of those stats, and if stats affect the character so they would affect the backstory. As for now i can provide a backstory for my last application to other campaign. I was not chosen so that character was not used but might give a peek of how i build my warlocks :P !BE AWARE THIS IS NOT BACKSTORY FOR THAT CHARACTER! Remember about Blagothkus. Aeolwyn Grymhart was a campaign plot hook person.
Living in the house Aeolwyn Grymhart Thadeus was rather quiet kid, causing problems from time to time which were mostly him being mean to other kids. At young age he sometimes felt powerful when his words could spark a reaction from others. At his teenage time he discovered you can get a reaction by being nice and he leaned towards that approach. He never really felt attachment to Lady Aeolwyn or any other person in the house. He was trying to be obedient and nice to everyone but did not felt any special connection. That changed when he left after becoming of age. He felt alone and missed every single soul from the orphanage. He felt loneliness before, but that was first that he remembers that he was truly alone with no one around. That was the moment he understood his real feelings for his "Family" at the orphanage, and he felt thankful for that time with them. Not having any better idea Thadeus joined the military to make a living. Not long after his training his unit was ordered to deploy near the border (either of wilderness with monsters, or enemy country). They all got one day of free time before leaving to front. Most of his unit went to town for drinks, and he did so as well. In the middle of the night, when some of the comrades were already deep drunk and some even asleep Thadeus felt the need to go for a walk. Wanted to be alone and to clear his head. Military unit was nothing like orphanage, there were some ok guys there but there were no real bonds between them. Sergeant used to tell that real bonds form on the battlefield... well we will see. Walking in full moon he wandered beyond the walls of town. Lost in thoughts he tripped and fell into an old well in a bad shape with crumbling walls. He lost consciousness from the fall. While asleep he dreamed of terrible nightmares and unimaginable horrors tormenting him. But at some point the "sound" called him and it was more and more familiar with every second. The longer the "sound" was calling him he felt less frighted. The sound was very close and somehow entered Thadeus, now the "sound" started rumbling within him and at some point became his. Not being able to hold the "sound" within himself he screamed with eldritch cry. But there was more than a scream leaving his mouth, something solid that made him choke, he grabbed it and pulled out what was a black and gooey Flail. Thadeus palmed the Flail and used it to fight the nightmare and horrors, feeling filled with that cold sound that felt so familiar he was unstoppable and fought his way out of slumber. When he woke up it was early morning, he felt horrible and had massive headache, but managed to climb out of the well. Rushed back to the barracks at the last second to be counted and not considered a deserter. This morning they marched. After couple days of marching they reached the outpost. There was week of accommodating and training together with other units. After that they marched to battle (either some big monster or army of monsters or enemy country troops). Battle was horribly one sided and later considered as a massacre by any who talked about it. Only a handful lived to tell the story. Thadeus had dreams of the "sound" reaching him again. The dreams repeated every night after the initial well incident. Every next dream the "sound" was closer and closer until it reached him again the first night in the outpost. Then he started to develop magical talents in the training. Those talents helped him survive that massacre. In first skirmish he was saved from the fatal blow by the armor of ice that formed on him and blasted his opponent. On another battle he saved most of his unit when darkness started to flow out of his body and they weren't discovered by the enemy. Lastly when command issued retreat he was able to run much faster and longer than anyone which saved his life as most of the remnants were killed while retreating. After that he retired from army and spend his days in a small village at the outskirts of civilization. Not knowing any real trade he served there as a militant. Keeping place safe of scavengers and wild animals, occasionally rallying whole village to fend off goblin attackers. He lived that life for more than a decade and felt like he found his place. Had dear friends and even a romantic episode, but his past prevented him from getting intimate. In the end she married someone else but there were no hard feelings on any side. Most of the folks in the village liked and helped each other. It was a good life. One misty afternoons when he stood guard at the northern entrance some trader came along and asked about Thadeus Buras. He had a letter. Thadeus decided to attend the funeral. He learned to think about the orphanage as his family and learned a lot there about love and affiliation. He wanted to be there.
Name of Character is the last i pick. I would rather not edit that post to avoid that alarm about mending with rolls (i do not know when it happens) so i will respond to that answer after i complete my character. Even when i complete it i can change it when you choose me or even make new i don't care. Here is link for my character sheet, when i post the sheet is pretty blank with standard array stats put in order from low to high, that will change as i create
1) race/class you would like to play: Kobold - Ranger (Drakewarden)
2) a short background summary: Vex used to live high up in the mountains with his tribe among the ruins that time forgot. He is sure it had a names at one point in time but now it is just the lair of his master, Egaxi, a rather large Brass Dragon. He was tasked with traveling his masters kingdom in search of any trespassers and dealing with them or reporting back to Egaxi an letting her take care of them herself. When one of his trips took him to the farthest corner of her "Kingdom" he returned to his home only to find a smoking ruin and nothing was left of his tribe or Egaxi. There was signs of a magical fight but nothing was left and he was alone. He was only able to take with him one stone "egg" that Egaxi kept in a hidden alcove. So he took the "egg" and fled in case whatever destroyed his world came back. He wandered the land seeking information on what might have happened to his tribe and his master, Egaxi. Hearing about the possible dragon activities in the area around Elturel, Vex decides to head that way looking for any clue as to the death of his master. He is familiar with the Harpers as Egaxi has dealt with them before, but he has not personal experience with them.
3) your method of determining ability scores (include rolls if rolling): I rolled in the DM I sent you.
2. Class: Warlock, Patron: Fiend, Pact of the Blade (Can change it before we play if it would fit campaign better)
3. Rolling for Ability scores is my jam: 1281016149
3.5. Background: Haunted One
4. Backstory: Tytus Wolan Was a born in family of farmers in one of the villages not far from Elturel, when he grew up he sometimes accompanied older siblings in voyage to Town for trade. He liked to chat with people and sometimes would ask about anything when a person seemed open enough. Everything in Town was different and much more Blagothkus/chaotic than the life on the fields. That way he met Gastiel, a local man from elturel who visited the trade market regularly. Gastiel and Tytus formed a loose friendship over some time of chatter when Tytus was in town selling whatever they made on the farm which was mostly beetroot. On one of those occasion when Tytus was already an adult man, Gastiel invited him to the tavern to have some drinks and fun with his other friends. He led him to a place without a name or a sing above the doors. But place was filled with very friendly people and some beer to drink so it seemed nice. After few drinks Tytus passed out. When he woke up he was somewhere else, possibly a cellar or a cave. He was stranded on a pedestal and naked. What woke him up was the pain from the strokes of whip on his back. There were many people in dark robes chanting. At some point out of the crowd of cloaked figures Gastiel came forth and declared Tytus as a sacrifice for the devil asking this devil to give them in return power over magic. Soon whole room went dark for a while. Everybody was silent, but the very second someone broke that silence, before you even could hear what was about to be said, it started. Tytus felt immense heat in his body followed with burst of excitement to the point of exhaustion which made him fall uncouncious again. When he woke up he was in another place again. It was a clean bed and soon two people came to greet him. One of them introduced himself as (Harper person) another one as (Order of the gauntlet person). They said that Gastiel was a target of their investigation for some time and they do not know what made him act so quickly all of a sudden, but are glad at least Tytus came out alive out of that scene. When they arrived in the cellar when they found Tytus everything was burned to ashes and it looked like the Tytus was a source of the fire while the flames did not burn him. They both offered to care for Tytus in time of recuperation. In that time magical powers of Tytus developed leading for a theory in progress that there had ocurred a contract with the devil as Gastiel intended. But he probably got played and the Devil chose to get many souls of cultists in exchange for the powers to the one who was an offering, rather than grant powers to many for a mere singular soul. After coming back to full health Tytus tried to return to his family farm, but he was changed and could not stay calm in one place. Felt like fears have it easier when he is one place, so he went back to Elturel and contected his saviors (Characters from Harpers and order of the gauntlet) to give him some work.
Backstory can be meddled with if needed of course.
PM sent but rolls didn't process. Posting here for stats to populate.
I am interested in joining your campaign. Blagothkus
Stat Rolls: 5, 10, 10, 12, 6, 16
I'd likely look at developing a Half orc champion fighter or Fairy or High Half Elf warlock and both might be multiclass, if allowed. Depending on rolls.
Background - Young adventurer from the Balders gate area. In the city just living life as a soldier or sage. Soldier - Half-orc sent to Elturel on the Sword Coast to gather intel by the order of the gauntlet. While travelling you happened upon a harper. or Sage - Warlock looking for mystical advancement in the arts from the library there. Before leaving a member the order of the gauntlet enlisted them to gather some intel of the city. While travelling there you happened upon a harper. These can be tweaked to fit more appropriately as needed.
I can flesh out the PC over the next 8 hrs or so.
Thanks for your consideration.

Characther will be a Half-Orc fighter champion Polearm master as it looks like the warlocks are a plenty. Grin...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
1) race/class you would like to play: Aasimar Bard - subclass either Lore or Glamour depending on the party needs, leaning towards Lore
2) a short background summary (will be tweaked/expanded to fit the DM's campaign hook/ rest of the party):
Soren Starstrider a bard born with celestial heritage. He grew up in Waterdeep, where his parents were merchants. However, Soren's life took a dramatic turn when he discovered his talent for gambling and entertainment. He became a smalltime legend in gambling circles as "The Celestial Charmer," thanks to his celestial charisma. During an underground bardic competition, he outshone all competitors, winning the favor of the audience and catching the attention of a mysterious organization. Realizing the danger, Soren left his underground gambling life behind, shifting to a life of adventuring.
Thank you to everyone for the applications and the time spent on the characters and background summaries. I'll be reading through the applications and messages today and possibly over the next couple of days. I will send a PM to those selected - if you haven't heard from me in the next few days, thank you so much for your interest and I really am sorry I can't select everyone. Best of luck to everybody with finding your future tables.

Currently playing: DM - Dragon of Icespire Peak | Tytus Wolan - Warlock (Chronicles of the Accursed) | Biezdar Kamrazzan - Warrior (Icespire Peak)

Grin...

Love your house rules but can't commit to the time frame🙁
I'll be keeping an eye out in the hopes you run something shorter in the future. All the best to you and your players!
3) stats roll: Ability scores: 12 14 10 14 15 12

I'll be reading through the applications and messages today and possibly over the next couple of days. I will send a PM to those selected - if you haven't heard from me in the next few days, thank you so much for your interest and I really am sorry I can't select everyone. Best of luck to everybody with finding your future tables.
