Full Disclosure: I am a newer DM and have never done a PBP, so this may be a bit bumpy. But I am curious and want to give it a shot. As the title says, I'm looking to do a Rome/Greek-themed adventure using DnD 5E. The world is homebrewed, as it is the Age of Antiquity, but with all the DnD races running around. I will use Discord for the actual posts, so I'll fire invites once there are enough players. Hit me up if there are questions, I have homebrewed a good chunk of the lore but am not a stickler.
I apologize in advance for the spam of questions, I just do a lot of PBP so I know the typical questions a lot of people ask when starting a new game and I'm trying to get a feel for what you have in mind.
So any official race/class is fair game, just has a Greco/Roman aesthetic? Are you using 2014 rules or 2024? For character creation, do you want rolled stats or can we use point buy? What level do you plan on starting at? Multiclassing allowed? As for gameplay itself, is your style more combat focused, role play focused, or a solid mix of both? How often would players be expected to post? And if players do not post within that time frame how would you like to proceed? Some DMs are fine with waiting days or weeks for players to post, others skip a player's turn if they take too long and come back around to them later, while others have been known to take over and pilot a character themselves for the turn just to keep initiative intact.
If I'm selected for your game, I have a tendency to wait and see what characters other players propose, then I pick one that fits. I make characters for fun so I have like 12 ready to go at a moment's notice with another 20+ that I can have ready quickly. I tend to lean towards martial characters instead of casters because I don't love counting spell slots but I can play whatever the team needs.
Sounds interesting - what time zone are you? re. character creation I like to roll for stats and use the results to fire of the creative process in collaboration with what the other players are positing.
I like a very active group so if I'm honest I'll lose interest fairly quickly if other players aren't active or are just going along for the ride and not contributing much,
Look forward to hearing back and seeing your responses to nightbirds questions :)
No worries, I didn’t give enough details so I anticipated this.
Any official race is good. Caveat people in game may act accordingly to your race. If you have a homebrew we can talk about it. If you want help making it meld with the world let me know. I have a doc that talked about how the races work in this world. I just don’t want to share with everyone at once
2014 rules
Rolled stats
Starting at level 3 (there are some unique subclasses I have that I can share later)
Multiclassing is allowed
I lean towards role playing but if the group comes to the consensus they want more combat then I will adjust.
Since this is my first pbp I don’t have a hard expectation. Post when you can. I’d say if more than a couple days elapse and you haven’t posted I may just pass on you and then allow you to say what you wanted to do. I won’t take control unless it’s holding combat up and even then I’m more likely to message you directly and ask if you can post. Moral of this is just let me know if you can or can’t, I’m flexible and want a relaxed game.
If you have other questions please ask. Message me directly or continue here.
i read the above posts, some introduction on my style and where it might match, and 1 question (is this is low magic or high magic world):
-a game that leans more towards role playing than combat in a Greek Rome style setting sounds nice!
-i can also play most classes but lean (opposite to nightbird) towards wisdom or charisma casters.
-I would be interested in seeing this in world race document you speak of before deciding which to play if it impacts how npc’s react
My proposed character for now (but also willing to work with the forum in making something that fits cohesively with the setting and others):
name: Pythagonies Gnologos
race: I envision a race with connections to nature and gives a “rough and tumble survivor” vibe , or one of the core (high population) races.
class: mostly bard (perhaps lore bard? Or eloquence bard but perhaps that is too strong for this campaign if it’s more roleplay than combat)
background: city center gossip (in his youth, eccentric babbler )
backstory: (rough for now) some form of partially retired philosopher type, not for want of power or wealth, only knowledge, who is a mix of the presocratics, whimsical believer of knowledge is power, and rhetoric is skill, but also maybe the elements are magical, and probably we are the playthings of the gods (I’m thinking a little bit terry pratchett style side comedy for the group between serious moments, but preferably not the main “serious” face of the group unless the group prefers me lean in that more straightedge direction (I often play paladins so that is doable as well)
stats: (are we rolling here in forum with any rerolled 1’s? Or in discord with avrae tools?)
Cool. For rolled stats, which method do you prefer?
I'll start brainstorming some concepts and see what I wind up with. Any lore you already wish to share beyond the initial premise? Else I can keep it vague enough to be amended later.
I am interested too! I would need to refresh my knowledge about the greek and roman empire(s), therefore I would like to know at what time concretely the story plays/happens (or on which time it is based on). I am not exactly sure about how this „posting“ matter will work out, but if you explain it to me I think I can write my >turns< and such things.
I am not sure about which species are enabled here, but I‘ll likely create a male human, about the class I am quite flexible, depends on what personality the character would have. I can imagine (him) being the serious (and spare-words) type, or and more mysterious/private person. I prefer intelligence and wisdom; next also dexterity and charisma. I have already thought about an outline of the character and it’s backstory, but in the end I am flexible and can wait for other’s preferences!
If you have space for me still and think I could fit in, gladly tell me!
I'd also be interested if you're still recruiting for this! I'm pretty flexible on class (though I do love playing half and full casters), and love exploring options beyond official sources if you have some extras that you'd be excited to see in-game. I have some experience with PBP as a player (mostly on forums here) which you can see on my profile if you're interested in checking out post style as part of recruitment, and a bit of DM experience as well. Just let me know on here or on Discord (same user) if you've still got space!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Id be up for it, Im pretty active on discord so i could easily do a few posts per day.

In GMT +1, and I plan on being g responsive but I won’t make promises whatever the group ends up looking like. If you think it’s slow let me know.

Is this something along the lines of this?

Rome/Greece sounds fun and very interesting. Are you homebrewing gods or using the Roman and Greek pantheon?
William Brackwater: Human Fighter - The Windward Isles
Tyrgram, the Butterfly Knight: Dwarf Warlock - Secret of Greenwold
Iòlinder Corrach: Half Elf War Cleric - Allansia Adventure
Valerius Sergius Publius: Dhampir Paladin - Vae Victus
Pretty close!
And using the actual Greek/Roman gods, along with Egyptian, Celtic, and a couple of other pantheons that were present back then.
Cool. For rolled stats, which method do you prefer?
