So, l just made a ranger, and chose beasts as their favored enemy. But the ability also gives a free language, and l have no idea what to use it for. Should l leave it blank? Should l choose sylvan? Advice is welcome and encouraged. (And no, l won't change my favored enemy to something else.)
Technically by the book it has to be a language that beasts speak. So giant owl would be a valid choice. There are several "beast languages" out in the 5E world. As a DM I let a ranger choose an appropriate language if one, or a decent one, isn't available. Sylvan, elvish, gnomish, whatever.
Hard core RAW people might call foul, but then those types don't typically associate language as any kind of important. Other types of players are more focused on everyone's fun at the table.
Maybe go with a language related to your favored terrain! Forest? Sylvan. Mountain? Dwarvish. Etc.

Thanks for the advice. What would you recommend for a Lizardfolk who grew up in a swamp?

Awesome!
The dungeon master's guide has some nice lists in the back of monsters from the monster manual that typically reside in different types of environments. Some of the swamp creatures that have unique languages speak: Bullywug (Bullywugs), Draconic, (Lizardfolk), Orc (Orcs), Abyssal (Yuan-ti), and Giant (Trolls).
If I were your DM you could 100% take one of these languages.
I have never played in a game that the dm cared what language I took. some dms would even give suggestions on good ones. I realize some dms will be strict but That usually doesn't change my choice anyway. I'm also 80% sure Crawford mentioned one time that the language was just thematic and not intended to be raw.(the only reason I remember is because he talks about the ranger so rarely)
As for a lizard folk. Yuan-ti could also be fun.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.
