So I'm joining a game here soon as Sylvari and was wondering the best way to build a veterinary necromancer for it in the ranger class, or if it's just possible in general. Ideally, I was hoping to use the Sylvari's power over plants to, in a way, to get inside the remains of animals for use in battle and just companionship when not in battle.
Rangers, as a class, have access to zero necromantic spells. The whole school of magic. Tasha's gives you access to Revivify, but that's it. So if you want to go necromancy, it's going to either require building a homebrew subclass, or reflavoring some of the existing summon whatever spells. And those don't come in until late in the game for Rangers. Frankly, there aren't a lot of proper necromantic spells before third level spells.
For reflavoring, I'd say Swarmkeeper has good potential, 'intangible nature spirits' can easily become will o the wisps or what have you. Fey Wanderer might also have potential, but for what you're describing I think Swarmkeeper sounds closer. I'd also take a look at the Druid circle of spores, as that's a lot closer to what you're describing. You could probably multiclass or take a level or two for flavor.
I played a Beast master ranger that had several pets die. the dm said I could summon all my dead pets with conjure animals. so flavor wise the ghosts of his dead pets was still protecting him.
A death cleric 9 and ranger x multiclass could be viable but thats your choice and I feel like it might not come online fast enough for your concept to be fun.
