I was just wondering, as a beastmaster at level 7 you get the ability to command your pet to certain actions as a bonus action.
Problem is, if you are using the Primal companion from Tasha's you can already do that, and much more as a bonus action.
So has any of you wondered, that the level 7 ability is a bit lackluster. Has any of you thought about another ability or something for level 7 ?
The full description reads:
Exceptional Training
Beginning at 7th level, on any of your turns when your beast companion doesn’t attack, you can use a bonus action to command the beast to take the Dash, Disengage, or Help action on its turn.
In addition, the beast's attacks now count as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
You're still gaining magical attacks on the companion so it's not a completely wasted feature, and you gain a third 2nd-level slot and 5th spell known at 7th-level as well so that feature doesn't need to be especially strong.

Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
Phb is only garbage if you're unwilling to play by what the design implies. Still it's not a playstyle for everyone/every table.
Both phb and tasha's have trade offs. The team knew just having magical attacks was enough for tasha's because of the other elements it adjusts to lower complexity and increase basic combat potential.
The fact that 7 "feels bad" shows how impressions don't reflect reality sometimes. In the end it balances out actions economy wise compared to the rest of the game.

The "other ability" at 7 that you get is that your subclass is actually good now as opposed to a steaming pile of garbage.
