Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, coming next month, includes reprinted rules for booming blade (and presumably green flame blade) spells that first appeared in the Sword Coast Adventurer'sGuide. However, the spell contains one small but crucial change, which could radically change how many players use the spell.
Booming blade (& green-flame blade) work by casting the spell and making a melee attack against a creature within the spell's range of 5 feet. If the attack hits, the creature takes normal damage and takes an additional 1d8 thunder damage if they willingly move before the start of the player's next turn. As booming blade is a cantrip, it grows in power as a character levels up, and the spell can be used in combination with a lot of different character builds to be a devastating attack in combat. However, the Tasha's Cauldron of Everything version of the spell changes the range to "self (5-foot radius)” which specifically negates booming blade's ability to sync with other abilities.
One of the biggest effect caused by the booming blade range change is that the spell no longer qualifies for the Twinned or Distant metamagic options, which means that sorcerers can't use their metamagic to target two creatures simultaneously with booming Blade or use distant to cast it with a reach weapon. It seems to no longer work with the warcaster feat either as warcaster has to target “only that creature”. But it does appear booming blade (and presumably green flame blade) still are comparable with the spell sniper feat if you still want to use reach weapons. Some specific builds may be effected and players will have to adapt. But new combinations may come up: like paladins sharing the spell with their Steed.

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything removed practically every fun feat that they added in unearthed arcana to play test even things that weren't that powerful and added a bunch of worthless feats and class options. It's as if the devs want every character to be a boring carbon copy of every other players character. Nothing interesting of fun in that splat book. I hope the devs become a little more imaginative in the future and stop making everything in 5e for the lowest common denominator.

This post seems to be functionally equivalent to this one posted 3 hours earlier.
