One of my players is playing a tiefling, which is a first for me as a DM. As a cantrip, she can cast Thaumaturgy. I'm trying to prepare myself for how to adjudicate these effects. Does anyone have any advice or experience? Do you just roll a wisdom check for the monsters or do you try to give credit for creative uses of the spell?
Keep in mind that none of the effects cause damage, at best they might make foes a bit nervous “ ok what is causing the ground to shake?” The ‘24 rules say the booming voice gives advantage to intimidation checks so that is potentially useful.we use the bird calls for signaling and the door opening/closing to check for locked/unlocked and traps when opening doors/windows from a distance to (hopefully) avoid effects. Team combos like opening a door and casting dancing lights thru it to see what is in the next room more clearly can be effective and useful.
While none of the Thaumaturgy effects have in any mechanical impact outside Booming Voice, as DM you can always rule otherwise if you judge the use of another minor wonder should do in a given situation.
I would certainly use Advantage or Disadvantage as a gauge level. For example, entertaining a crowd using Fire Play could give Advantage to Charisma (Performance) checks. Alternatively, using Phantom Sound or Tremors to get an animal to behave in a certain way or become agitated could grant Advantage to Wisdom (Animal Handling) check or Disadvantage to Wisdom saving throw.
