That actually depends a lot. Sentinel really shines when you have other allies focused on melee combat, with a good sense of positioning to get the most out of the feat and of course enemies fighting at melee distance.
Sentinel becomes overpowered only when paired with PAM and a reach weapon, otherwise is a nice feat.
Sentinel is certainly a good feat but its not a game changer that will make all encounter too easy. Its somewhat situational and has no bearing in combat when no opportunity attack is provoked or when enemies within melee range attack you.
Will it give a player too much advantage over other 1st level players, or will it be a helpful ability without making combat too easy?
Soon to be DM.
Currently in a homebrew post-apocalyptic game.
