Me and a group have been playing ... a module ... (Tomb Of Annihilation).
<so stop reading here if you don't want extra spoilers).
We have in the group two brothers, one playing a Cleric, one a Rogue. The Rogue NEVER searches anything, splits off from the party, and is constantly setting off traps and encounters then tries to hide and makes us deal with what happens. The only reason he is still alive is a mix of lucky rolls, Death Ward, and his Cleric brother chasing after him.
The latest:
Rogue goes exploring - against team advice - and comes across what is a stationary area of darkness in a wall (a Sphere of Annihilation, as we got told later). He first throws in his pet frog - I kid you not - and when it fails to come out, throws in one end of a rope. GM tells him that the part of the rope entering the blackness is now GONE (so he now has a very short rope) so he now states that he is is STICKING HIS ARM IN.
GM reads the module and the Sphere mechanics and comes up with the result that since "his entire body was not placed inside", he just takes Force damage and his arm is a "bit damaged" so the Cleric just heals wounds, and GM states "arm back to normal".
Is this what is supposed to happen? Should he not be missing an arm now? His arm should have been removed AND he should have taken damage on top as a result surely.
I am being a bit vindictive here asking for "arm removal", but this guy never learns anything, and this, in my opinion, should have been the ultimate lesson in not to do just random stupid stuff, and nothing really resulted.
What would be the "official" result of what he did? Other then reading the module to see if that Sphere in that wall works differently from a Sphere in the DM's guide, I can't very well form a final opinion.
He's pushing boundaries to see how far he can get away with it, he crossed a line ... and you let him away with it so he's going to continue. He's had every opportunity to learn so his arm should be gone.
I had a player that liked to do the run off, get away from the party slow the game down and such. So one time he said his character had to pee, so he went out of the house the adventure was taking place in to pee. So add 1 Bear that gets mad and swipes off a certain male only appendage, character never left the groups side again.
