my character was knocked unconscious then thrown 60ft across the map and down into a 40 ft pit. i know the knocking me unconscious is nonlethal but what about the rest i assume that would just kill the character at that point. am i wrong about this?
When you would reduce a creature to 0 Hit Points with a melee attack, you can instead reduce the creature to 1 Hit Point and give it the Unconscious condition by knocking it out.
A creature that falls takes damage at the end of the fall, If you reach 0 Hit Points and don’t die instantly, you have the Unconscious condition until you regain any Hit Points, and you now face making Death Saving Throws.
The rules as written don't have a way for a fall to pull punches, especially if Unconscious you're even less able to protect yourself and so should take 4d6 Bludgeoning damage.
But there can always be luck, IRL some people have survived incredible fall distance, so in the end DM can rule how they want.

There's no nonlethal damage, it is always lethal.

I'd talk with the DM about this. It feels more like a group-specific ruling. It's not bad, not wrong, but not really in the books (being thrown).
