let’s say I have a game where the party gets cornered in an old broken down fortress and they need to re-fortify in order to fend off an oncoming hoard of lizard-men or some such. What skill or ability would determine knowledge of how to build and modify the structure similar to a real world engineer or architect?
I think there could be a lot of ways. Maybe a tool proficiency in carpenter Or masonry tools. I’d also allow if someone had an appropriate background for it. Maybe guild artisan depending which guild, or something like soldier, Knight or mercenary. Basically I’d let the PCs try to convince me they had some reason to be able to know how to repair it.
Then make a check to see how good a job they do. If they have a good reason to be able to fix it, they can add their proficiency bonus to the roll. If not, well, there’s a lot of ability scores that could work, str to move things around, int or wis to figure out where to move it to.

Mason's tools if stone, carpentry tools if wood.
