I'm running a fighter/wildmagic Sorc multiclass I made a spell that basically combines Green-flame blade and Chaos bolt. I'm not sure about spell damage scaling or anything like that as it's my first homebrew spell I just want to know if it is unbalanced or kind of busted
A few questions. Do you make a weapon attack as part of the casting of the spell like Green Flame Blade or do you need to cast it with an Action and then attack with the weapon with another Action.
This is a 3rd level spell right?
Why do you have a weird as range of Touch and 120 ft?
And finally since you listed the components as VSM I am assuming you cannot cast this with a sword and board unless you have Warcaster?
If the magic only persists until a single attack is made, then it's only slightly stronger than Chaos Bolt, and is weaker in other respects, so it should be rated as a weak 2nd level spell.
If the magic instead persisted for a full minute, it would be comparable to Holy Weapon (5th level).
ya i wasn't sure how to change the range but its supposed to be a melee spell but i think i fixed it in my updated version basically yes the attack action is part of the attack as for the VSM I'm likely going to cut the V but yea i have the warcaster but ya way i see it you could do it with a one-handed weapon or warcaster
It isn't OP for one simple reason. it takes one action to cast it and another action to attack with it - that's two actions for 3d8+1d6+probably around 3 (for a low level character) damage with a rapier. At higher levels the damage improves but 2 actions for this much damage is weak. Magic Missile at the same level is dealing 14 guaranteed damage at this point (compared to 20 average damage here) and you can cast a cantrip the next round - Green Flame Blade deals an additional 1d8+3 as well as a further 3 to the person next to the target (a total of 24.5 damage.
Making this bonus action casting might make it a lot more viable.

ouu i like the idea of making it last longer like holy weapon, do you have any suggestions on damage scaling?
