A campaign I joined is going to start soon and I decided to run with a character idea I've been wanting to mess around with. The idea for the character is a sorcerer that is actually just sentient magic hat that controls a mannequin (named him Mana Quinn for the pun). After talking with my DM we settled on Reborn as the race which also opened up some back story opportunities.
Here's the overview for the backstory I have so far: a hat brought to life via wildmagic surge from a tiefling sorcerer. After being cared for by the store owner for a few weeks, Quinn left one night after having memories appear of a life he never had. Along the way practiced with his magical abilities to protect himself in a fight as well as swindled various people to fund his journey. Searching for the tiefling that brought him into existence he joins some adventurers going on a descent into avernus in hopes of meeting his maker.
Anyone have any interesting additions I should add?
In the Players of Destiny release for... 2.5 or 3.5, they had a race called Illuminati or something similar, that had Sigils or Glyphs rotating around their heads. Um... they were base human, but were basically magical glyphs and symbols in a human form....
(I remember them because it was from an edition that included Tieflings prior to the whole 'pact with a greater Devil' race description... Tieflings were basically just half-demons with at least one visible physical non-human part (they didn't ALL have devils horns and tails). It's actually my favorite Teifling racial definition yet, as they had bonuses to Dex and maybe INT or Wis, and a -2 Cha penalty... and they were described as widely varying in appearance (which sort of fits my image of cast off dregs born from human women and demons, or vice versa who're sort of slum dogs of the planes).

3.5's Races of Destiny had Illumians. They were bald people with magic sigils on their heads, but I don't have the book near me right now.
Maybe flesh out the tiefling a little bit. They are your main tie to the world and so there should be more to them. I recommend talking to your dm about this as they could also flesh them out behind the scenes so you are surprised if you ever meet them.
How will you know them and why do you want to find them?
What memories do they begin to see?
I have some ideas about why they are seeing these memories but your dm might do as well and they might want to surprise you with it. Talk to them about this as well.
What mechanics are you thinking of for a magical hat and wooden body? Were you going with a straight undead reborn, or will there be changes to fit that unique character design?

I have a weird sense of humor.

Other than that, I think its fine.
I hope this helps.
