I have been playing since seventh grade, and running the game since eighth. I have written for myself and my players much lore for worlds I have created and characters that I've played.
Lore is a story When I start creating any type of lore, I always need to remember, "Lore is just a story". Lore is just the story that gives your world, character, or NPC meaning. If you create a world, but it has no background, your players will find it very bland. Understand, that some characters create their lore in the game, and many NPCs do not need any lore. The world and main NPCs need that lore, so your players will give their attention to the world and its inhabitants
How to do it? The acts Almost every story has three acts, Act one: Introduce it. The world is full of greenery, The character is cheerful. Explain how your character or the world was/is. Act two: The climax: When everything changes or goes wrong. The world burned, The character was cursed and lost their memory. Make it surprising, fun, scary, whatever you want it to be. It's the most important act of the lore. If this act is not as good as I would want it to be, the entire lore is the same. Act three: The finally: The world is now rebuilding, The character is now on a quest to regain their memory. This is the part of the lore where you will bring it to the current time. You will need to connect your campaign to the world, or the character to the game.
Flesh it out Now that you have your acts you need to give it depth. Give it everything you got. You need to connect the different points in your story and add more points that will create a story that you ar your players can get lost in for hours. This is the most important step in this creation of lore.
Go over it Here you check if this has turned out how you wanted. You might want to go over it with a friend or your DM.
And you have Lore And now you can play with your character or add a map to your world and run it for your players.
