Rolling random characters on DND Beyond this morning and the 'dice' gave me something interesting - I prefer to roll the numbers first and then select race and class based on what I roll. My first set of numbers had the extremes - an 18, a 16 and a 5. Initially I was thinking extremely low charisma but changed my mind to low intelligence and so Fan the huge half orc barbarian was born. - this guy is as dumb as dogshit, but can take a beating like you wouldn't believe and while almost as smart as an ox, is definitely as strong as one, exiled from his barbarian tribe for just being so f..ing stupid, he was loitering aimlessly around the edge of a settlement, when a tiny gnome, who was in a spot of bother with some locals, has come across him. Too stupid to pronounce the gnomes full name, Fan just calls him Pal and that name has stuck. Pal is incredibly agile, has a razor sharp intelligence, a very loose sense of ownership and dabbles a little in magic. (another set of interesting rolls)
Somehow they have formed an unlikely friendship and are somewhat co-dependent. Because of his low intelligence, Fan is usually quite placid and will not rage unless someone tries to hurt Pal or Pal tricks him into thinking he is being hurt, in which case he flies into a rage and only stops when Pal calms him down. He does whatever Fan tells him to do without questioning, unless it is something that will obviously hurt him. Fan wears a heavy breastplate and carries a huge axe. Pal can often be seen perched upon Pal's shoulder, entertaining Fan with stories or simple illusions.
Unless you were playing a campaign where a DM allowed a player multiple characters, I think they would be too unwieldy, But I think they have great potential as NPCs.
