So atm I am making a character for a friends campaign which he said will have nautical and land adventure, plenty of demons, as well as pirates!
My character is a Naga (from planeshift book) Path of the depths barbarian (from the bilgewater book) pirate seeking revenge for his captain (yes I got the okay for everything I have backstory wise and his class/race so no worries there DM read over it all)
Story atm: So essentially what I have is that he was born in (a kind of criminal underground of thieves, pirates, black market stuff, ect kinda a underdark city but above ground which he is going to give me the name of) with his mother being an exotic prostitute and his father unkown leaving him as an urchin on the street eventually being taken in by a (thinking teifling but leaning towards Tabaxi) women who turned out to be the captain of a pirate ship with a decently spread reputation giving him a job as a deck swab.
Over the years he grew older and built quite the reputation himself going up in the ranks of her crew almost becoming her first mate... until one day (the equivalent of this worlds black beard) crossed the crews path and after a one sided sea battle he sees his captain die trying to get their crew to the life boats as the ship started to capsize... as he was running to aid her he tripped and a chain wrapped around him dragging him down with the ship to the abyss of the great blue...
As he passes out struggling to breath he awakes spitting up water like a dying man grasping to life, scars across his body in the shape of chains, and the feeling of despair and rage... he chooses to act upon rage over despair giving into his anger screaming on the ship and begins trying to get his footing.
His personality: He holds his freedom over all, he cares about those close to him and is undyingly loyal to them, he is chaotic neutral, and he bears a hatred for the killer of his crew... his friends... his family.
What I know about the party: We have a Tortle bard named Kev who plays the bongos (this player I have played with before and he is great at pulling off chaotic, we all adore his rat person wizard thompson), We have a warforged alchemist, and a hot headed fire genasi wizard that has perverted tendancies.
I think it is a good foundation to build off of. You could start playing now and find the nuance as you play.
What I would like to see is something that leaves him being open to joining the party. At the moment the only thing is revenge, which is fine so long as the rest of the party also wants to go after the same NPC. Give him a reason to compromise, perhaps he is seeking a new family to transfer his undyingly loyal to (subconsciously?) and can delay his revenge a little if he meets someone he can call a friend? Or he knows he needs to train and gain experience before taking on the pirate so has no choice but to let the rage simmer underneath.
I'd also like to see a quality that makes him fun to play with. Loves bad puns? Always tries to get to know people better? Something to help you engage with the DM and other players at the table.
I find that looking into the lore of a place/race/class (mostly youtube) is a great place for inspiration. But, yeah, as I said I think you've got everything you need to get started and a few possible hooks for your DM to build off of. Plus the chain scars are really cool :).
Yeah I was thinking on the fact that he is nowhere ready and how he recently gained supernatural powers from when he sank to the bottom of the ocean... as if he became somewhat one with the depths which I am giving the DM to use as plot so the cause and stuff is actually something me and my character don't know.
AS for the family thing that is part of his personality I want to explore, like he comes off as a lone wolf like he doesn't care about anyone, I want him to snap at the first party member who says he seems heartless and to become somewhat out of character defensive... because he cared and still cares about his family he just hides that shit deep inside from everyone else because he chooses to indulge in his basic desires to escape those feelings due to a fear of abandonment from when he was a child. So I do plan for him to subconsciously get close to the party and ease his way in.
As for his quirks I plan for him to be very chaotic in the sense of having fun, bad puns, and choosing desire over good and evil encouraging the paladin to spend the night with the women he had his eyes on and encouraging the scumbag loneshark to get his pay back through making those who owe him throw him a party he won't forget. Essentially someone not focusing on good or evil but purely a chaotic neutral kind of mentality may feel the need to save a kid due to his past trauma but may cut a mans throat to send a message with a grin just to prevent the hassle of a fight in the future. (not a murder hobo obviously, more story narrative stuff.)
I also have a fighting tactic quirk for him using grapples and poisons, like grapple multiple people dragging them to a watery grave, chugging poison and biting someone he is restraining, ect. I like to also look at him as pretty unstable in a almost bipolar way with many unresolved emotional issues masking that weakness with a faced of bravado and confidence. Insecure from his past and his feelings kind of deal so instead of backing down from fear that fear may drive him further into danger from his insecurity to show said fear.
Also he has a special sword he managed to save which belonged to his captain a rusted greatsword with a clean ornate handle giving the DM some mystery to work with later on if he chooses to.
Would love to share an image I set up for him but idk how I would do that here lol.
Good to hear I am not the only one lol, the person who puts almost as effort as me in his character is making his tortle bard kevin with bongos and a surfer dude voice lol. He somehow manages to pull of funny goofy characters that are well done.
his rat person wizard thompson learned magic as a janitor at the wizard school and would go into empty classrooms to make beleive he was a teacher lol.

It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of him as a character, and I think I'd enjoy playing on the same table as him. I think your set.
Thanks! Always worried I don’t do enough though lol so gotta ask others to be sure!
No worries, I totally get it. I worry I haven't done enough, then worry I've done too much!
