Arcane Vigor is cool! The Cleric’s union rep might be lawyering up heh heh heh. This makes me think that they are leaving more options open to how you build your D&D party now. In the past, the class specializations necessitated divine healers to be active party members for a group to survive prolonged dungeon crawls (or for the DM to hand out potions like a maniac). Sheerly for the fact that it is possibly changing how parties can be built (i.e. less requirement to have a healer class), I will give this a 4/5 myself…
Divine Smite like the man says, not really a new spell. It was tucked away in a class ability that Paladins previously had and it consumed a spell slot when used, so it was essentially already a Paladin spell just not categorized as one. I played a Paladin and used this all the time, but I guess I mistakenly thought it was only eligible to be used once on my turn. So even when I was getting two attacks per round, I only ever applied the expended spell slot to one attack! I think I confused this as being a channel divinity ability somehow. But it looks like they had intended it to only be used once, so in a wierd way I guess I was playing for the correct version to be used in the future haha. The bonus action expenditure is kinda lame though, but since it is a spell I guess it requires an action. It is also cool that it can be used for any attacks. I also really like that the cap is removed! Nice clean up effort here: my score is 3/5 for maintenance!
Elementalism hmm … not excited about the spell at all. I guess it’s cool for a cantrip. All I am thinking is “if I create clean water and drink it, does it evaporate in my body after 1 minute?” I also rate this a 2/5 because it feels like a spell meant for role play that will not be exciting enough to use often or evoke any interesting moods beyond getting flashy once or twice…
Fount of Moonlight I like this spell, but I wish they would have allowed you to also either gain resistance to fire (because that’s what Devils use, and divine magic is usually angelic) or necrotic damage (because that is the opposite of divine light in my brain). I just don’t see myself activating this to try to cause radiant damage to a creature that would also be dealing radiant damage to get a resistance to radiant damage. The ability to blind those who are attacking you is what truly makes this a 4th level spell. If you couple this with something that marks yourself as a target (not sure if that exists in the 2024 PHB, but if it does) it could get nasty! I say 3/5 for now since you can’t upscale…
Jallarzi’s Storm of Radiance I think what I like about this spell the most is that it actually stops spell casters from using spells that require a verbal component while it damages the heck of them! Combo-Ing this with other spells will be gnarlyyyyy. 4/5 I say!
Power Word Fortify I think … potentially insane if you cast it on one person like our guy here says but 7th level hmm… 3/5 because there are likely other spells I would choose.
Sorcerous Burst gotta love exploding dice with your own chosen damage type, 5/5 I say
Starry Wisp I like that it causes the invisibility condition to be nullified… but I am less excited about this spell. Is okay. 3/5 I say.
Tashsa’s Bubbling Cauldron I am happy Tasha has her own spell! I wish you could scale this up and have higher rarity potions hehehe, 4/5 I say
Yolande’s Regal Presence Interesting spell but at 5th level I think it should do more damage. 3/5 I say!
I really like this guy’s critical observations on the spells and his comparisons to other spells we do know.
New Spells
She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
None of the new spells are like OMG, but none of them are terrible either. I guess that is good.
