Was looking at spell selection for a blacksmith as title says. Was curious for input, obviously at DM allowance/discretion. Was thinking 2 wiz/X artificer:
Heat metal
Gust ( to act like a bellows)
Create Bonfire (either heat metal or burn wood to make charcoal for smelting)
Mending
Stone Shape (Bloomery/Blast Furnace)
Fabricate
Alchemy Jug ( for various quenching liquids pre-fabricate)
This was mainly to amuse myself with no thought of effectivity in a party. Also was looking at everything needed potentially from iron ore to Fabrication with finished steel ingot
Read a number of posts pointing out fabricate says "You convert raw materials into products of the same material." And it got down to whether steel and iron ore qualify as "the same material" but just more processed or not.

I guess that’s going to be a DM ruling, I see your point.
For sure, if I were only going two levels in Wiz, I'd go School of Conjuration. The Minor Conjuration feature would be invaluable for a working blacksmith.
If you're multiclassing, getting some Forge Cleric in there would seem to be a must
Also, I'd probably work at it from the other direction -- how can I reflavor spells to make them fit a blacksmith theme? For instance, blindness/deafness could be burning embers getting into people's eyes, or the clang of hammer on anvil ringing in their ears

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)

It’s kind of cheating, but why not just fabricate?
And then I see it was already on the list. But once you have it, why bother with the rest?

Why not just go pure Artificer? It’s got everything you need. You can even make your anvil a homonculus.
It was to maximize cantrips to not be bottle necked by spell slots. Really the whole concept was a mental exercise
