I made a small plasmoid Battlesmith Artificer. Sadly, people are too use to smushing slimes to think of him as anything else (leading to the faceless background). The way he gets around that is by taking skins of dead things to use as a form, however, his face is always emotionless. His armor and the skin keeps him from loosing his shape when he sleeps, and he always cast alarm around him so that he doesn't get touched while sleeping (a liquid in a flask still has a liquid feel to it, and when he sleeps, he becomes more of a liquid). The Steel Defender is a snake, and has a hollow tube throughout it that he can fit in. However, when he is in the snake, he can't see, and so only general directions can be given (the steel defender takes the dodge or dash action, and runs either straight away from something (ie. any mobs), or straight towards a designated area (ie, a landmark like a mountain or the nearest town, but not something hard to find, such as a specific address or a village hidden amoung the trees)
Assassin stinks. It doesn't deliver on its promise at all. You can easily get advantage as a Rogue with use of stealth, and unless you have a full team that's all also excellent at stealth, it's pretty hard to get surprise in combat. You can get Disguise Kit or Poisoner's Kit proficiency with your race or background. The higher level abilities stink too... you need to spend a week and 25 gp to set up a false identity? Just take expertise in Deception and any other Rogue could pull off the same thing. You can impersonate someone by observing them for an hour? Literally anyone could take the Actor feat and get an even better version of that same skill in just 1 minute.
The only upside to the Assassin subclass is that you get to call yourself an Assassin. But with flavoring, any class could be an assassin... what the class really does is turn you into a spy. But not even an exciting James Bond style spy... a boring real life spy where most of your skills and abilities take weeks to set up and are only useful in very specific infiltration settings.

Oh no, I'm not worried about damage... I actually think that the flavor of the Assassin class just really sucks. Most of the skills you get from the subclass are features that most DMs would allow you to do even without overtly having them as subclass skills (I mean... how often do you get a week of free time to set up a fake identity? I think any class could pull that off without stretching the imagination). Tell me what you like about the Assassin subclass, and I promise I can recommend a more efficient way to accomplish it and also get the benefits of a more exciting subclass.

I would go with monk or monk/warlock
you would be creating an assassin that is basically the liquid metal terminator
