I’m building an Undying Warlock & Shadow Magic Sorcerer build. Trying to snap up as much protection magic as possible. I’d like to take Tomb of Levistus, but I need the theme it in a way that makes sense for the character.
The character embodies someone who has ‘beaten’ death, and can call on those who have passed on to help them. Summon Undead/Shadowspawn are likely their go to combat concentration spells. Magic missiles are souls/spectres that fly and impact the target. Shield is a spectral form appears to deflect the attack. etc.
So what would a Tomb of Levistus look like? It’s vulnerable to fire, and I’m “frozen” while it’s active.
What if your character becomes all dried out like a mummified corpse? This might even be what they should look like if not for whatever strange magics keep them going? Being "dried out" could explain the fire vulnerability, meanwhile if the essence of the character is temporarily "gone" it explains why they're less vulnerable to harm. When the effect ends the spirt returns and the body is restored?
Otherwise it depends how over the top you're okay with it going; I like the idea of an iron maiden type device slamming shut around you, or maybe a "wicker man" grows around you (it being wooden could explain the fire vulnerability).
You could also maybe keep it as ice in part, but describe it as being "cold as the grave", maybe some spectral presence causes everything to become freezing cold, so you do still freeze over to a degree? But maybe it's more of a layer than being frozen into a giant block of ice?
Former D&D Beyond Customer of six years: With the axing of piecemeal purchasing, lack of meaningful development, and toxic moderation the site isn't worth paying for anymore. I remain a free user only until my groups are done migrating from DDB, and if necessary D&D, after which I'm done. There are better systems owned by better companies out there.
I have unsubscribed from all topics and will not reply to messages. My homebrew is now 100% unsupported.
I like where you are going with the first idea. It could look like my spirit/essence is knocked backwards out of my body, hovering nearby. Meanwhile the body reverts to what it should look like if I had died all those years ago. A dried husk.
Your second idea is a bit crazy. I had one similar that I couldn’t settle on. My body encases in wraps like mummification. Fire could burn them away. But yeah, a bit too crazy hah!
I do plan on a couple of spells with the “cold as the grave” theme. Armour of Agathys and Frosbite for example. I just found it hard to justify a whole layer of ice.
If no one else has anything to beat it, I will likely go with the soul knocked out of me idea. Thanks!
