I had a neat character idea for a hexblade. Normally the hexblade is a patron in form of a sentient weapon, that starts a pact with some being. I always liked the idea, that this weapon could be a sentient holy avenger (because why does it have to be evil or dark, right?). I also liked the warforged race for their mechanics (no sleep, food, drink, etc). So i thought, what would be a great character idea, that combines the two, and i came to this. There is an acient threat (in our homebrew campaign, that i won't go into any detail here), that the avenger was created to prevent. But the great hero, that were to wield the weapon, to fight against that threat, never came, so the avenger needed to act on it's own. The avenger somehow got control of the mannequin that holds the avenger for centuries and started to get out into the world to fight the threat on it's own.
It is just a quick idea and i wanted to hear, what you all think about it, and what ideas you have to compliment that character (in a background/lore/mechanical way).
That's a pretty cool idea. I think that the Inheritor background from Sword Coast Adventurer's guide would fit, though you'd have work out how the weapon stats worked if you're wielding yourself- it's obviously too powerful for a 1st level character to start with a Holy Avenger.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
I have a similar character to this in another game where as a Warforged my Hexblade Patron is literally the relic that as used to animate the character. Makes for some particularly fun internal monologues negotiating for additional power and never knowing if the patron is listening. :)

What do you think?

no special treatment, of course.
the avenger lost most of it's power with it's transformation, so it is just the regular pact weapon now.
Edit: Oh and nice idea with the background. quite fitting!
