Hey I'm trying to make a weird Level 1 Fighter + Level 6 Wizard + Level 2 Warlock build that uses hand crossbows and eldritch blast. I know it's not great but I have my reasons.
The new 2024 Crossbow Expert Feat is going to make this kind of difficult because it requires 2 hand crossbows to get the bonus action attack which would make me unable to cast spells with a material component (hands full). I think I found a way around this but I need feedback to check if I'm right.
Each turn in 5e you technically get to interact with an object/item for free (no action needed). This can include drawing OR stowing a weapon (but not both unfortunately). So I figured I could rotate between turns I start off with both hand crossbows drawn (Form 1) and turns I start off with only 1 hand crossbow drawn (Form 2).
On Form 1 turns I'd use my normal weapon attack, then my bonus action attack, and then stow the offhand weapon to allow me to finish off with an Eldritch Blast.
On Form 2 turns I'd use my normal weapon attack, then Eldritch Blast, then draw my offhand weapon to allow me to finish off with a bonus action attack.
Can I do this? Does that work RAW? Man I wish they left crossbow expert alone so I could just use 1 hand crossbow and not even bother with this.
Yes, this works RAW! By alternating free object interactions each turn—stowing an offhand crossbow (Form 1) or drawing it (Form 2)—you satisfy Crossbow Expert’s bonus action attack while casting Eldritch Blast. Creative and valid!

Yeah, that sounds about right. I don't see why it wouldn't work RAW.
That sounds preddy cool! You'd be nigh untouched with the AC and medium range
"Oh, don't we know eachother?"
