Hello Fellow Beyonders!
I'm excited to say that, today, we have updated Encounters to Beta which means that the Combat Tracker is now available for ALL users.
Now you can build and run your encounter without first having a subscription.
With this update, we've also released a few things that have been plaguing us for a while.
Auto-Update Character Stats
Characters in the combat tracker now have their status updated automatically when they change on the character sheet. This means that you, the DM, don't have to keep looking back to the character sheet to know how much damage you need to do in order to take out the character (wink wink). It also gives you other information that might be helpful in non-combat situations as well. For example, you can see a character's passive perception which will help to hide that ambush before it is sprung.
Initiative Rolls Automatically Added
With an encounter open and the initiative area visible, any initiative roll that is made by a character in the campaign will automatically be put in the initiative area so that you don't have to copy and paste it over. This will overwrite any value that is already there so if someone rolls twice it'll take the last value. You can always update if something goes wrong.
We hope these changes help make it easier for you to run your combat, beat on your characters, and have a great holiday season!

As always, we welcome feedback. There are still a lot of things that could be better about the Encounter tool. We want to hear what's most important to you. You can either reply in the comments or go to our Encounters Feedback Portal to leave us your thoughts.
Happy Holidays!
thank you so much! Merry Christmas!
The initiative one is a BIG one, IMO. That, to me, was a huge headache that always interrupted the 'flow' of a combat encounter by stalling at the start of it. I really hate initiative.
Now, if you could just add a button for the DM to push to reroll everyone's initiatives each round, that'd be even more fantastic.
Has this fixed the issue with dice rolls not showing up in the game log and showing either ??? or ... ? Is this why its been flaky/broken for the last couple of weeks?
Whoa! My group hasn't played in a while, but we finally got into a session tonight with a huge combat encounter and I was DELIGHTED to discover all these changes. Had no idea they just landed today! This is stuff that I've been wishing for since we started our campaign last year, and it made GMing combat SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much smoother. Awesome work!
Totally agree with both parts of this comment and I think there are more of us than show up here in the comments with this opinion.
SAVE ENCOUNTER button disappeared with this update. Do we really trust you to autosave to the last hit point change?
Trust in this web-based service is already fragile.. convince me.
This update seems to have robbed me of the ability to roll enemy/npc dice from their description block.... which seems like a huge step backward for me, a shame as i've been so excited for this update for months and months! Hopefully it comes back!
UPDATE: Oh, it seems to be back! yay, perfect. :) one other comment, it looks like as the DM you can't edit player HP, which tbh is fine, but just wondering if this is probably because the API for the HP fetch request is one way? Or just because the data can only go one way or something like that? a fine trade off IMO. :)
tryed that for a while with my players...
we quickly found a lot of things that do not fit into the combat encounters if you reroll the initiative...
making monsters slower to play if they get high initatives and then low initatives, their legendary actions will not reset until way later thus giving unnecessary time for the players to kill it before anythig else be done. it also gives back reactions faster for players and monsters alike making things more powerfull. so basically if your monster or players ends up playing tw times ina row cause of iniatives rolls or too far from each others, those players might feel cheated out of their combat. at least its what hapenned to my group. had to change back because of those... there was also that guy who always take alert and was always playing normally.
but yeah the actual system has as some definitive problems with time initative !!!
too bad cause i really love time initiative... but yeah... ended up being too clunky in this edition.
Great update!!! Can we please have an option for multiple monsters to be labeled 1,2,3, etc. instead of A, B,C, etc.? My markers for my physical minis are numbered, not lettered. Might sound niche, but I’m sure a lot of other DMs use numbers too. Thanks!
Awesome!!!!
This may be a unique problem for me but I'm no longer able to scroll while creating an encounter, which limits the amount of groups I can place in the encounter and still have them all be visible. Currently I have to scroll out in my browser window which is unnecessarily complicated as a solution for this problem. If I'm not completely mistaken you were able to scroll down in the encounter you are currently creating before this update.
Getting this back would be nice.
This is for me as well
This is great! Is the ability to rename creatures and change the multiple creatures from A B C to 1 2 3 in the works? That’s one of the last things making me hesitant to use this all the time.
This is the update that will make the encounter builder usable in the game. Adding hitpoints and updating them in multiple locations was a pain.
I was getting worried that all development had stopped!
Thanks for keeping it up.
I'm still seeing the old encounter tool even after a force reload and logging out and logging back in. is there something special i need to do to get the new version activated?
Edit: Working now, it's great!
Absolutely love the update!
I have noticed however, when discussing the changes to one of the players in my campaign, he tried making encounters for himself as a tester. He has realised despite me blocking all the sourcebooks and manuals so only I can see them on the apps, he is able to fully look at all stat blocks for all the books I have blocked in the campaign, is this a bug?
Ayo how do i play this man this is confusing bout to leave see yall been a confusing 10 minutes idk where to go also misspelled my name soo
This is a problem for me as well
Dice rolls with Advantage are an issue on iPad tablets. It is difficult to roll with Advantage. I do not know why DNDBEYOND cannot make it so that if Initiative is indicated with an "A" for advantage, why clicking on it won't automatically roll advantage. Because several of my players use iPads and can't right click some of them have to roll twice and DNDBEYOND only acknowledges the last one, so I as DM still have to check for which one was "better".
But almost getting there.
Great update, ty DNDB, appreciate the work you guys are doing. I have a few questions as to features "asks". Im not sure where you post features planned, or if you do, but I was hoping to get an idea as to these asks.
1. When will conditions be added to the encounter tool?
2. Are you planning on allowing encounters to be shared and importable? Seems to me a greta addon for DNDB would be that if I buy a campaign from you in digital form, I also get the encounters built out and ready to use or manipulate. If that's not in the works, then can you create a way for us as DM's to build encounters and then share them with each other so we dont all have to manually build the same campaign encounters over and over?
Again, thanks for the great work,
