The Forgotten Realms

From Waterdeep’s bright spires to Underdark caverns that swallow light, the Forgotten Realms is where tavern rumors become epic quests.

What Is the Forgotten Realms?

The Forgotten Realms is one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most storied settings. It encompasses Faerûn, a magical world of epic heroes and villains with bustling trade roads and perilous frontiers. While the setting has decades of history spanning a multitude of D&D books, novels, video games, and more, you can jump into a campaign today to tell your own story—no research required.

New to the Realms?

If you’re new, an excellent place to start is with the free Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure. This will introduce you and your party to the Sword Coast—home to cosmopolitan cities like Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Baldur’s Gate.

From there, feel free to wander wherever adventure calls! Maybe you'll visit the neighboring Dalelands, where quiet villages hide ancient ruins and old magic. Or, you could venture north to Icewind Dale, sail south for the jungles of Chult, or descend into the Underdark to explore the deep recesses of the realm.

The Sword Coast

Merchant princes, masked lords, and monsters in the wilds. While the trade ways between Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Baldur’s Gate have created a safe corridor and thriving economy, danger still lurks in the shadows of cities and vast wilderness.

The Dalelands

Rolling dales and old forests ringed by ancient ruins. Explore Shadowdale, Mistledale, and the Cormanthor woods, where the fallen city of Myth Drannor whispers of lost glory.

Icewind Dale

A hard land of cracking ice and long nights. Brave the Ten-Towns, bargain with trappers and reindeer herders, and face terrors that prowl the tundra. The Arcane Brotherhood chases secrets here, and legends of one of the Realm's greatest heroes, Drizzt Do’Urden, still echo on the wind.

Chult

Steaming jungles, lost cities, and deadly ruins. Chart the coasts near Port Nyanzaru, explore the wilderness while navigating dangerous flora and fauna, and delve into vine-choked ziggurats where ancient power stirs.

The Underdark

Labyrinthine caverns ruled by drow houses, mind flayers, and worse. Navigate webs of intrigue in the drow city of Menzoberranzan, resist the psychic dominion of illithids and aberrations, and flee the clutches of horrors that seek tender surface-dwellers.

Calimshan

A sun-baked realm of caravans traveling across the desert, bustling bazaars, and potent magic. Walk the streets of Calimport, where intrigue and ambition thrive, or explore the deserts hiding the secrets of genie factions.

Moonshae Isles

Sail to Gwynneth, Alaron, and the wild Moray to explore these misty isles steeped in nature magic. You'll find druids guarding sacred groves, ample fey influence, and rumors of a divine embodiment of the isles stirring.
